In my '04 147jtd the first time I press the brake pedal after starting the car, both the ABS and VDC System failure warnings go off, then stay lit up until I switch the ignition off. I've tried disconnecting the battery for about 12hrs, but this has not helped. Anyone have any ideas?
Many thanks,
Just spoke to rarebear and he has confirmed that the cable I have to fit my 156 and spider should fit your 147. Once you've sorted the battery out and ruled this out you could bring it over to mine and we'll plug it in using alfadiag. See what fault it brings up. That would give you a starting point on what to change if there are any faults. I'll be able to clear any faults on the ECU too. I live in charminster so 5 mins form you.
I also had this problem. After a bit of long road driving with only radio on and no cruise control and climate control the battery charged up again and the faults dissapeared.
Thanks for those suggestions - I charged the battery to the max whilst it was disconnected, so I don't think it's that. Joss, thanks for your very kind offer. When would it be convenient to pop down to Charminster to see you?
Tomorrow is fine for me. Any time after 3 as I'm usually back from work about 2.30 ish give or take a bit of traffic. If not friday then anytime sunday should be ok. I'm up in london sat at autodelta for a remap so that day I won't be available. I'll pm you my address mate. Let me know what you decide.
Could possible be the altinator is nakered and the battery is not holding its charge? Had Same problem on my 156 and it turned out to be the altinator. Is your battery holding charge ok?
It does sound suspiciously like the brake light switch, a common problem; if it is that, there will be no fault code recorded.
You could try removing the brake light switch & giving it a good dousing with contact cleaner, which may cure the problem temporarily - if you're really brave, try dismantling the switch & cleaning it, but you'll probably find that one of the contacts is heavily eroded, so a replacement switch (around £15) is the only permanent cure.
Dave, thanks very much for that suggestion. New switch received today off eBay (£5.19 !!) and the problem has been solved. This forum has saved me a fortune this month, with this problem and my broken rear wiper fix thanks to you and Joss!
had this proble on my jtd and the problem was the battery was on its way out. whilst the battery still started the engine fine its low voltage caused this and other problems either during systems check just after startup or soon after drivinfg off
I bought my 156 jtd with the ABS light on, its now MOT time so need to get rid of it. Both front sensors have the same resistance, i havent checked the rear yet.
I have a OBD2 cable and downloaded KWP71Diag.exe. Will that alone be enough to determine where the problem lies? Thanks in advanced
I have had it for a while now so hopefully that is the cure for me too! I have ordered rarebares cable though just to have a check over and make sure it is just that switch. It is definitly not the battery on mine as I put a new one only 18 months ago and the problem was there before and still is now.
Dave, like you said IF its not. At least by doing this fault finding I will know then, as there wont be any error codes there when I check and if there is I know its not the switch.
i'll check the switch near the brake pedal and run diagnostic. I have also got the FiatScanEcu software, saw somewhere that its compatible. Can any of these programs clear faults?
Right, my comp wont sync with the ABS ECU but it will link up with the engine ECU?? why is that?
ABS light and handbrake lights are still on, It isnt any of the wheel sensors, nor the brake pedal siwtch. Connector to the ABS module seems to be corrosion free.
What can i check next? Please help me solve this problem!
Do i join the pins in the diagnostic socket or the lead to the comp? What/how would you suggest to do this safely? I dont want to damage/short anything i shouldnt be!
i joined pins 1 and 7 in com lead (just to change ABS light). The comp still couldnt link up to the cars diagnostic. I got two different erros from fiatECUscan. One was 'you need k line/vagcom/OBDkey interface to connect to this module' i then switched the cable type in the settings from elm 327 to OBD. I then got the following error 'No ECU response. Check your cable and serial port settings'
Any help would be really appreciated!!
KKL type lead should be in the post today. Will let you know how it goes!
