Selespead - Very snatchy when cold

Hello. Recently acquired a 2002 147 2.0 ts Selespeed Luso. I've got a number of gearbox / Selespeed issues......

- It thumps into gears, so is quite jerky.
- It crunches (like valcro being pulled apart) between gears sometimes, and most often between 2nd and 3rd.
- It throws up an error on the console from time to time saying 'Selespeed system failure' when going into 5, or sometimes whilst already in 5th. This error doesn't seem to have any impact on the car, it all continues to function, and engages the gear correctly.

These issues will no doubt keep me busy, and I'd be grateful for any advice. The main issue at this point though is......

- When cold, and only when cold for the first minute or two, it's very snatchy when pulling away slowly in either 1st or reverse. If I boot it then there's no issue. If not it kangaroo’s something chronic!

Any suggestions?

Hello,

you may want to look here
Alfa Romeo Selespeed - Faults and troubleshooting

You have FiatECUScan/AlfaDiag (full version) and a cable, if not, get it!

This sounds like a job for calibrating. With the software and cable you can do it yourself.

I calibrated mine when its driven warm, changing gears then is very good, when engine cold, its a little bit jerky (but i think, i have a slight EV0 problem). I live with it.

Jerky Selespeed 156 2.0L ts.

Sounds like Phil's problems pretty much match mine. All bar the fith gear thing.

Bought my 156 Selespeed about a year ago now and absolutly love driving it. Just been getting clunky between gears and now getting really jerky on pulling away. Espescially when cold. Has got 115,000 on the clock. The engin was replaced by Alfa at 54,000 but no mention of clutch.

Have read on here about adjusting the clutch bar? Is it worth doing this as a first measure or will need the AlfaDiag as well to be able to do this? Also how much is the AlfaDiag and cable? And where can i get it? Or is it just best to leave it to an expert?

Any advice would be welcome.

Cheers!

Chris.

My old sellespeed used to be jerky when changing gear. It turned out to be the MAF was faulty.
The sellespeeds really dont like dodgy MAF's.

Before adjusting and calibrating you may want to take a look at your EV0. Cleaning it helps a lot (In the middle of this thread i tried to show how this worksAlfa-GT.de - das Alfa Romeo GT Forum - Gummiüberzug Kupplung Selespeed). Around EV0 over time old oil is collected and that sticks. Oil change does not help here (which btw is recommended nontheless) because thats the lowest point in the unit, new oil is not likely to reach this point.

Ours was ok in the warmer months. However in the winter it was always a bit jerky if moving off from cold. Remedy was to allow her to warm up for a while,(give the windscreen a bit of a clean, check the lights and so on?) and then after a few minutes of warm up she was fine.;) :):

I love my Selespeed,
Mine does a strange thing: when it is cold, temps. between -5 and +4, when I start the car (usually on second try) the city mode goes off and it doesn't allow me to switch it on again. I drive for 2 or 3 minutes on manual or sport, turn off the car and when I turn it on agian it's perfect!!! Also when the outside temp is lower than -5, even -15, this does not happen.
It does not bother me at all, but I was just curious, did anyone else observe this?
Thanks

Thanks everyone for taking the time to post tips / advice.

Sounds like you may be on the right track there Asterix. As you said i do have a bit of a dribble comming from the overflow. At least i think that's where it's coming from? Will get and the wheel and cover plate off like Findus shows in his link. Wouldn't hurt to have a check for any other leaks?

Will definately get and get the AlfaDiag sorted though. Sounds like a handy piece of kit to have hanging around just in case of any future prob's!

Also, just in the process of relocating to the Leighton Buzzard / Milton Keyenes area. Anyone know of any useful Alfa nutts / Mechanics in that area? In case i get stuck!

Thanks again guys!

Chris.
