Hi Guys,
Just bought a 2000 2.4 JTD sportwagon and its got no power! It struggles to rev to 3000 and is lazy reving at a standstill - there is no smoke though, could this be the EGR valve?
Ideas please
Regards Steve
Sounds like a complete absence of boost. Can you hear the turbo spinning when you accelerate?
Obvious thing to do is check the pipes from the turbo to the intercooler and from the intercooler to the inlet manifold. I think it would be smoking if the turbo was goosed. If it's not a boost issue then the next step is to look at fuelling.
There's a big hole in the intercooler! New one on order from UK car cooling, £105 inc postage compared to 160 +vat from Alfa dealers
Hopefully problem solved.
Power is improved but nowhere near what it should be, still struggles to rev over 3000rpm and power is only between 2000 and 2300rpm - I think I'll try another MAF, any other ideas?
Check the small pipe that comes from the turbo to a solenoid thats behind the radiator and then onto a metal pipe that comes across the engine,my 1.9 16v had exactly the same symptoms and it was a very small split in this pipe,it's the acuator for the variable vanes in the turbo,i tried putting tape around it but it made no difference.
Erm there is no solonoid behind the radiator? Is this only on later models? The small pipe from the turbo attaches directly to the turbo actuator. I disconnected the MAF and there is a marked improvement to performance so I'll try and take it out for a clean.
On a slightly different but related note - where should the engine warning light be? Mine doesn't seem to come on when I turn the ignition on or with the MAF disconnected, I'm guessing the kind previous owner has disconnected it!
If your SW has a silver cover on the engine (136BHP) you have the small turbo without variable vanes.
