Hi there

Quick question on engine oil for my diesel GT. Please bear with me as I am a complete fool when it comes to engines!

The computer shows 3 bars on the engine oil guage so I suppose I need to top it up. I've done it before, don't know what I used (I think it was Castrol).

So my questioin is twofold: Can anyone recommend a decent, but not pricey, oil for my 1.9 diesel, and I don't have the time or means to drain the oil so is it OK for me to simply top it up?

Thanks for your advice.

Hello and good morning to you. Firstly, do you know when your engine oil was last changed, the mileage and by whom? They may advise you as to what oil was put into the engine. Secondly, Selenia WR is the oil of choice, also recommended by AR. Failing that Castrol Edge, it is a first class oil IMO and I can't get Selenia here in Co. Leitrim. Lastly, do not depend on the computer to show you your oil level........use the dipstick. Oh yes, Any doubts as to when oil was last changed..... well spend some shillings and get the job done right....you have a class car

Thanks for your response Leitrim.

As I needed to get it done this morning I had a whizz round various forums etc. and I've gone with Castrol Edge. I've ended up getting the fully synthetic 0W - 30. My brother in law is actually a car mechanic and said if I'm just topping up it's fine to use a decent-ish oil until the next oil change at its upcoming service.

0-30 will be fine as a top up, yes the correct oil is Selenia WR 5-40 and well worth the money to use the correct stuff but Castrol Edge 0 - 30 is what the likes of vw recommend for their TDI engines. Oh and so do Vauxhall and the 1.9 jtd is the same engine that goes in the vectra so you aint going to have any problems.

I have been told that if you are going to undertake a full oil change you need to use the oil as recommended by the manufacturer. With top-ups of no more than a litre you can use anything that may be slightly worse or slightly better than the recommended oil.

I topped up with Edge 0W-30 and it's fine.

Plus I don't see how using a non-recommended oil can affect a warranty. Firstly, who will bother checking, and secondly, how will anyone know?
