Mileage stored on speedo?

I've read in a few places that the mileage is stored on the speedo on pre 2002 cars? I purchased a replacement speedo from a chap who said it had 68K on it, when it arrived it read 84K. I sent it back and he sent another as he said he had two, which then read 155K!! I wasnt sure if my car was adding miles stored in the ECU to the speedo, or whether the speedo this man has sent just had the wrong miles on it? My car is June 2001 and has done 61K...

This is turning out to be quite frustrating. I dont want to have sent this back again. Urgh.

Well mate. I have a 2003 53 phase 2 156 and the speedo was changed in it at 33,000 miles. It has been out by 33,000 ever since and that was by an alfa dealer according to the recipts from the previous owner. So I'd say its stored in the speedo even on the later cars!

I think you answered you own question when you said the new speedo's don't show the true mileage.

The mileage is stored on the ECU but this isn't sent to the speedo .. that holds a separate reading.

So you live with the wrong mileage (dealers changing speedos will record the change in the log book) or you try and find someone who can change the mileage on the speedo electronically ...

I tried to to get this done but they charge a fortune to change it.

I swapped black\orange dials for silver on my 156 worked fine. Lost 8k and it looks loads better
