I have recently bought new brakes for my '99 156 1.8 Lusso. Pads and discs all round... My questions are the following
1. Rear discs are original (10yrs plus) and are rusted on good and proper. Any advice taking them off?
2. See the Picture attached, the new front pads supplied is the bottom one. As you can see they are not the correct ones and the supplier has adviced that I have a rare type? Can anyone confirm which ones I have? Strange calipers perhaps...
Solid or vented front discs? That's the usual key to which pads. The pads are different depending on the disc type and can't be swapped. Most 1.8s had solid discs but occasionally they were shipped with vented. Later models (post-01 were all vented) PS The calipers are also different!
Rears are similar with smaller discs on the earlier models and the usual features is the calipers are ribbed.
Have you had a look at the how-to on my website? If you get the rears to the point where they should fall off (LOL!) ... then you can treat them to a good thumping. Hit the disc and turn it, then hit it again, etc. Eventually the rust lets go and it breaks loose. Obviously not a good idea if you aren't changing the discs!!
Hi Gazza,
Yes i know your site - great advice provided for people like me, have a go and garage if all else fails. I followed your "brakes how-to" pdf, much appreciated.
I have solid disks on my car. I will have a good bash (literally) at the rear disks this weekend... if i get the chance. thanks again.

According to Ferodo catalogue the upper two pads are FDS1134 used with 281mm solid discs (like yours) and the bottom one is FDS1052 which is used with 284mm ventilated discs.
Thanks guys for all the advice. I have managed to swap my brakes with another 156'er who has had the same issue the other way around. this is a great place with great people!
