Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me with a funny suspension noise I have on my 156 TS, when I go over a speed bump, or any weight goes on the car (these are two examples of the suspension being compressed, I am not saying it is only speedbumps) I hear a noise like a spring being compressed and then when it goes off, the reverse, it is passenger side front only, I had it in the only Northern Ireland Alfa dealer a couple of weeks ago, but they could not see anything obvious(though they do not have a good reputation anyway). Any ideas or suggestions would be great.
possibly wishbones, i had one changed recently causing a noise which i think is similar to what you're describing, may be the beginning of them being on the way out before any knocking or anything starts, if you have a decent specialist nearby get them to give it a look over
It may be the spring moving as it's not located against the formed bit of metal on the shock so it can twist a little as it's compressed. Think Ive got a similar noise only mine is when you turn the wheel.
Sounds like either worn suspension bushings, or possibly just a rubbing from the spring in the shock strut.
Maybe try spraying some silicone spray lubricant onto the top and bottom of the spring where it joins the strut.
Chances are though it's worn bushings. Mine squeek as well, especially with the dry weather we've been having.
My 156SW occasionally emits an odd 'bong' sound from the front - L/H, I think - when cornering enthusiastically. Never worked out why, and it sailed through French MoT recently.
Sounds a bit like a heavy spring being released - which, so far, it hasn't...
Thanks for al the reply folks, the noise is more of a springy noise rather than a squeak, I will have a look at it this weekend, though as I said, dealer could find nothing wrong with it and told me it was safe. Well it might be safe to drive, but I don't want a sproing noise every time I hit a bump nice Mr Alfa Dealer Man!!
I had a noise like that, and when i braked etc - turned out to be the anti-rollbar (tensioner/stabiliser)
