Well finally just spent around £240 on getting the aux crank pulley done on the 156 due to a nasty rattle, guess what, no difference made. I still have a rattle when accelerating which seems to be getting louder and louder and is rather embarassing.
I think to be honest this is the end of the road for the 156 now, which really is a shame as it is a nice car to drive, but unfortunately it is bleeding me dry. I have spent so much money on this car, it beggers belief, and working it out I would have been better off buying a new car on finance than keeping it!
If anyone does have any final suggestion as to what this could be, I would be extremely grateful. Engine is a recon' 3.0 litre unit fitted late last year, so nothing on the internals of the engine for sure.
My guess is clutch/flywheel related, as I have just noticed after driving it that when depressing the clutch ever so slightly, the noise does dissapear. When engaging the clutch again, the noise comes back. This only applies when driving the car, there is no noise when the engine is revved or sitting idling.
I have posted so many threads about this now and still I have no answer or idea as to what this rattle could be. The reason I replaced the crank aux pulley was because it was running out of true and bouncing all over the place, looking like it was going to fall off, but as I said, absolutely no difference made. I just pray that this could be a cheap fix otherwise unfortunately, the car really has got to go this time.
Clutch was fitted just under 20,000 miles ago and in fairness, the car has had this problem for some time. Slave cylinder was also changed recently. No clutch rattle at idle, with the clutch engaged or disengaged. Also engages and disengages smoothly.
This rattle? does it only occur when your booting it??? If so then it may be the normal induction rattle of the V6, if it's really bad then it may be the inlet mainfold rattling away on the rear head due to born bushes.
No, doesn't feel clunky when changing gears or anything like that. The rattle is there when accelerating, but about 8 times as loud when putting the engine under load. I have never heard anything like it in my life.
I think it may be an idea if I get a specialist to look at it, none near me at all so will have to travel a fair way.
No it's not a clicking noise, nothing like injector noise or anything like that.
This is definately a rattle, a metallic rattle that increases in noise when putting the engine under load in a high gear, like 6th gear at 40mph - that is when it is most noticeable.
As the noise disappears when the clutch is engaged, I am more than postive that this could be something in the gearbox. My local garage have no idea what the problem is, without stripping the car down and having a good look.
It just seems strange that nobody else on here has had this problem. The gearbox doesn't whine either. I once had a Rover which when slowing down used to make this incredible whining sound, a bit like a bus - that was diagnosed as the input shaft bearing on the gearbox, but all gears engage on the Alfa engage smoothly.
I've got a recon' engine that has covered about 5,000 miles and is still under warranty, so I doubt it is that! The rattle is only there when accelerating.
Why don't you bring it in for a saturday surgery at Autolusso? I know its a bit of a trek for you but at least it ain't gonna cost you anything besides petrol and we'll give an honest opinion on what we think is causing the noise.
Thats what I was thinking when I asked "Does it feel at all clunky when you use the clutch or change gear?", usually you can feel the end float in the clutch. We just condemned a 2.5 V6 for the same thing last week.
Well if this helps, I have found this as a suprise (discovered after removing battery tray and intake pipe)...
I'm really not sure what has happened here. I thought maybe this was an inspection hole on the casing like my Delta HF Turbo had, but there is no grommet over the top of it. Never seen anything like this before ???
Even though this is the same gearbox that was fitted to the 2.5 engine I had?
