Hi
Just driven 250 miles, had to top up 4LTs of oil.........
Perfomance was 10-10, average speed 80MPH, no smoke no oil leaks so where is it going??
Thought if it was burning that much oil smoke would bellow from the exhaust!!!!!!!
I know they use oil but not that much.....
Just had service......92k on the clock.
Any idea's.........
Thanks Paul:thumbs:
Hi Dave
Thanks for your reply
The 147 had a service 3/4 weeks ago.......on Fri 23rd April i was was off to London, done routine checks no oil showing on dip.
So ibought some Varoline 10-40, it took 4lts.....as i was reaching London the oil pressure light came up twice, so i let the oil settle for about 30min...done a dip...empty added another 4lts semi sym 10-40.
As i said no leaks no smoke..........Performance 10-10
Thanks Paul
It is possible, but Cornwall to London is under 300 miles, if it burnt 4L of oil in that time I would have thought there would be visible smoke. Quite a lot of it!
Have you got an undertray under your engine? My old Fiat 20v had one and spilt oil from a service would collect on it, although the amount you seem to have lost it would have to be a lake of oil by now!!
I am not a mechanic....but common sence states i would be blooming everywhere!!!!!!!!!!
Is there some i can do look at to check if oil is being burnt??? Other than thedip stick
Thanks
As everyone else has said its the amount of loss and it's running fine things that would cause it to use that much would make it run terrible.Just a thought though are you getting an accurate dip? I have had cars where the dip was dry until you had cold engine not an Alfa a Pajero some cars the stick has to be right way round. If you have overfilled the oil will pass the rings and blow out exhaust will also wreck cat and oxy sensor>You could drain sump to be sure be careful dont drop sump plug have a big drip tray and an old shirt oil will go up your arm.
It's a similar story with my 156. In about 500 miles it uses a litre. Except, one day I checked it after a week and it had used nothing at all. I've been topping up with several types of oil and I seem to have hit on something that reduces the consumption - shame I don't know which type it was I have heard from people locally that the genuine Selenia 20K oil reduces the consumption.
MY car uses a litre every 3-400 miles on short journeys but considerably less on long journeys. Did a 200 mile round trip the other week, didn't move off the max mark, yet normally I'm putting a litre in every 3-400 miles!!
I'm perplexed as to where it's going cause there ain't any clouds of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust and it passed it's emission tests for it's MOT too!!
I just keep topping it up - part of my weekly routine!
I'll post up some pictures later to explain why.
Basically I did a cambelt change on my car today, and my car has been run on castrol GTX Magnatec for most of its life. The inside of the cam cover is exceptionally clean for a 114k engine.
The last 3 cars I have done cambelt changes on had been run on Selenia, and the inside of the cam covers was black. Not just coloured black either but coated in a black varnish like substance. It was even inside the oil cutouts on the cam bearing caps, so it was also more than likely eleswhere in the engine as well.
When i bought my car the oil was fine.
Replaced it with mobil 10w40, never had any problems.
My mechanic done the oil change this time and i don't know what oil it's on, but it's seem to be always at the half way mark on dip.
I'm topping it up with the remainder of my mobil so hopefully it cures the problem.
Don't get how that works though
my 1.6 has been run on selenia since 02, but i've just had an oil change and my indy advises not to use selenia:
A- its so expensive
B- it burns too quickly and he advises using any other brand and seeing if it burns - in his experience other brands dont burn, nothing like selenia anyway.
done about 16k miles in 4 years, and its needed topping up of say 1.7l?
will see how my current oil does, been 2 months, no top up yet.
I always use Selenia and have done in the past on my Integrale (and was paranoid with the dry sump), never had an issue and very rarely have to top up my 147 TS, maybe once between oil changes (not even 500ml) and its bang on the top mark. Shouldnt it be more to do with whether the car has been "run in" properley and looked after rather than the oil name?

Any more ideas about my situation!!!!!!!
Many thanks Paul
the only oil that reduced consumption was the selenia 10w60. i cant trace it now so i tried EVERYTHING and keeps using oil... almost 1L every 1200-1500 miles. Im trying 5w40 Fully synthetic Agip HTS. it looks good so far.
