Upper wishbone change - questions!

I like to ask stupid questions to come out a little wiser in the end. To the point.

Both upper wishbones are shot, you know the story, clunk clunk.

I've looked at the guide at alfaworkhop. It looks quite simple but..is the joint that you need the correct tool, the one that separates the outer joint, is that difficult to separate?

Also, the mounting bolt, What size is that, I think it might be a good idea to change that.

What about torque, do I really need a super correct one?

Any other common problems that could occur? These guides are great but sometimes things don't go quite as a smoothly as you would espect.

Thanks for your help :)

I just replaced mine today using the alfaworkshop guide. All went totally to plan, amazingly! The ball joints were very tight into the suspension upright, but nothing the splitter couldn't cope with (scissor type) I wouldn't bother replacing any bolts unless they're chewed up. Everythings a mixutre of 17mm head m10 & 19mm m12. As for torquing the nuts & bolts... if you can find the figures, do it :) I just did everything up nice & tight, but not enough to start stripping threads...

Good luck, though you shouldnt need it!

It's worthwhile replacing the long bolts that run through the wishbone. These can wear and you can still have squeaking or knocking even after new wishbones are in. They are about £12 I think from eb spares. I got the torque values from a thread here......but I can't remember which one....try a search. I've heard that powerflex bushes need constant greasing to prevent squeaking. I simply bought original Alfa items, again from eb spares. It's worth doing the anti roll bar droplinks while you're there if they haven't been done. Bolt on item, very easy.

They squeaked & clonked on 1 side, and just clonked on the other. Half a mind to send the bill to the highways agency, for making no effort to repair the roads round me whatsoever! The wishbones I've just taken off the car have been on since new & covered 84k, so hopefully the next lot will last as long as the rest of the car. I wasn't expecting miracles from replacing just the top wishbones, but the ride is much improved :)

Thanks - you fellas are fantastic! :)

So, plenty of lithium grease or what type? These mounting bolts look quite ordinary, anybody know their size? 2 bolts and nutsat £12.50 + VAT and shipping to Sweden. Gonna be £40 for 2 bolts. Don't get me wrong, god knows I spend money on her but that's just....hm... I dunno.
