I have been very busy today changing my cambelt, and after I fitted it I noticed something very strange.
I used the correct tools with the pulleys slack and the dial gauge stuck down the plug hole.
I tensioned the belt, so that the pointer pointed at the hole, the rotated the engine twice, rechecked the tension and the timing. - Spot on.
Then when everything was done up I refitted the cam cover and the coils so that I could start the engine.
When the engine stopped the run of the belt between the exhaust pulley and the crank pulley was quite slack, and the pointer on the tensioner was pointing upwards (Maximum tension)
Is that normal? I haven't noticed it happen before on the (admittedly) few TS engines I have worked on.
After restarting the engine, the pointer again hovers back over the hole, and about 50% of the time the engine stops with the front run of the belt tight, and the tensioner in the right place.
After tensioning.
