Had a bit of nightmare getting my 156 through its MOT. It's failed on the parking lights, as the key wont go into the parking position on the ignition.
Tried the spare and am pressing the little button on the ignition column.
Dim dip means that with the ignition on, the sidelight position turns the dip beams on but dimmed (hence "dim dip").
So to test the side lights you need to use the parking light position.
My 1994 Fiat Cinq has dim dip.
The 156 does not, so it isn't tested on that.
The mechanic seemed to think the MOT required the sidelights to be tested with the ignition off and as I couldn't get the key into the park position it failed, is that not right then? In which case I should go back and demand a retest!
Best thing to do is try yours again. Button does have to go in further than flush with surround. Once you got it working, go back and tell him that it is NOT in the MOT. When he insists, show him it working and tell him he should go work for Qwik Fit.
Spray some WD40 into the lock and around the button, play with it until you get it to work.
I agree with the others that it probably doesn't NEED to be working, but from a practical standpoint you have no other way of leaving the parking lights on with the ignition off and car locked, so surely it should be working in case you ever need to actually use the parking lights.
