You have a fantastic car, however it's seen as too powerful for your 'insurance' age. You will be lucky to even get 3rd part only for 2 k! The reality is that you will really struggle to get that car insured for you for a reasonable cost I'm afraid. But good luck anyway! You could try and use your parents policy, some insurers let you built up no claims as you're the main driver. If you really want to drive the alfa this IMO is your best option.

last year I was insured for £3000 (@ 18 years old) TPFT and I got lucky because Quinn Direct were beating everyone else buy £2000+..
This year im with Aviva, adding my cousin brought it down by £400. Im now paying £1600.

The only hope you have is by adding parents on with years of experience and no claims, even then it will still be a stupid amount worth more than the car itself.
considering you have a drive, why not get insured on a the lowest insurance group and cheapest car you can find for a year and then try again when your 18? It's cheaper and you have a year to fix up your car etc.

Just had a quick check, £3520.50 from RAC for a 19 year old w/ 1 year no claims. Best quote by £2000

Your chances aren't looking too great at the moment, most people's car insurance have been going up aswell so I don't think you will find anything reasonable around this time.

Mine was 1200 fully comp at 17 for a 147 120bhp. Which was with more than business. I hear aviva are offering cheap insurance to younger people. £6000 is very expensive for a 1.6, my insurance will be 3800 for a 2,2 brera at 19 with no no claims which isnt too bad.

p.s everyones insurance will have gone up over the last few months so now is a bad time really.

gazza sounds like you got a good deal like. my mum has something like 10+ years no claims so i am gunna try and go under her insurance but i think it is still gunna cost me a bomb. yea quinn direct went into administration the other week so ther out the window :L

word of warning though if your mum already has a car then her no claims bonus will be tied up in that policy a no claims bonus can only be used one 1 policy at a time, we had this problem with my younger brother, also if the policy is in your mums name the car must be registered to her too, and you will not earn your own no claims bonus either

when i was a new driver at 19 i was paying £1600 tpft on a 1.4 escort, and that was 5 years ago. you will be lucky to get even tpft for under 2k i would have thought. once i had 2 years ncb it really dropped, that was the first time i was able to afford to insure a "sporty" car, think it was about £1200 for my Seat Leon Cupra then. my renewal this year is £550 fully comp ncb protected on my 2.4 20v. don't forget your postcode makes a huge difference aswell

im 21 and i got my renewal quote through this week its £813 fully comp on my own policy i have been driving since i was 17 and so far haven't made a claim apart from a windscreen chip which they shouldn't take as anything anyway but for some reason that is on my record??? my 1st car was a 1litre corsa i cant remember exactly how much that was but think about £1600-£1700 with my mum as main driver and me as named driver

That's interesting. Mine's about that in NZ dollars, or in other words, half that... :)
Getting old does have its advantages I guess, but I think it peaks at about 25, I haven't saved any money on insurance in the last five years.

This is probably going to be the least helpful advice I've ever posted on this forum, but... to the original poster - move to New Zealand

Insurance is not yet a legal requirement here. When I was 16 and had my full license, I did get third-party-only insurance on my FIAT 128 Coupe for what seemed like an excessive $250/year (about £120). But the nice surprise was that it makes little difference what size engine you have or what age the car is - all they're really interested in is the value of the car. My Uno Turbo, for example, was $400/year for comprehensive cover when I was 21. My 1116cc Uno 60 had been $380/year when I was 20. Most of my other 20+ cars have been uninsured...

If you go on your mum or dads name its exactly the same price as if you were the main driver and they were named, they became wise to this and put the price the same.

My quote was business insurance with social and commuting, with 2 people as named drivers as an all driver comprensive cover. If someone writes it off they will only pay out for my car if the person driving was over 25. Of corse if someone crashes into me i will claim from their insurance.

In the famous words of Eminem if i crash- It wasn't me. :D

This is exactly what I did.

I'm 20 the car is a 2.0 147 parked on the road in London with 3 years NCB and I'm the only driver on the policy. Damage for this year is just under a grand.

Being young and male sucks for insurance!

I reckon it must be illegal what these companies do. Imagine if they proved that an ethnic minority were 'higher risk'. Obviously sexism and ageism is ok but racism is a no no!

#25 ·
and direct line have by far been the cheapest for me since i passed my test. all depends where you live i suppose.

#26 ·
yeah, i've been with all different companies, 1st year was with Quota.co.uk, then went with Norwich Union for 2 years then Churchill 2 years and with premium choice now, and believe me i spent days checking every single company i could find, lol, just seems to be different for everyone, but for the younger drivers i have found Flux Direct to be cheapest on several occasions

#27 ·
flux where cheaper for me, but not by much, but when it came to actually using there service, the limit 7days a year for adding a courtesy car to your policy for nothing, was a joke. as i went over that and then some at a cost of £65 per week after i used the 7 days, in one garage visit.

wereas direct line will add a car to your policy for nothing providing its a lower insurance group than your current car. that for outweighs the measly decrease in annual cost for me.

#28 ·
You have to be a bit careful with 10 month policies when you first pass your test. I had them to build up no claims but then had trouble when I went to change companies with 3 years no claims built up as when I went for quotes a lot of companies said I couldn't have more no claims than years since I passed my test so it can be a false economy.

To be honest I think the comments are right about having a smaller car for a bit. However frustrating it is, I drove a 1.2 clio for 2 years before getting on a 1.6 147

Well no, sexism and ageism is obviously NOT ok, any more than racism.
What you are actually railing against is STATISTICS. Unfortunately young males as a group have more accidents statistically, whereas I don't think anyone (?) would suggest that any particular racial group has more accidents than any other, although I doubt these statistics are collected.
If it were shown that drivers from a certain ethnic group had more accidents you can bet the insurance companies would load their premiums accordingly:eek:
I accept that I have to pay to have the car that I want, it's just a fact of life. I also understand that it's all done on statistics. My point was just that if they statisticly found that an ethnic minority were higher risk there would be an outcry but when it is men and young people it is a different story.

I think I sounded more moany than I intended. I blame spending too much time with the mrs!

i done the pass plus thing and it was fine for the 1st year of insurance, i got a discount from direct line but when i came to renew it all the insurance companies said they only give discounts for it in your 1st year of driving so my insurance nearly doubled with direct line who obviously wanted to regain the discount they gave me on the 1st year. I went with morethan after that which saved me just over a grand

my 1.6 156 is g11
my old grand dad car - G reg '90 rover 414 was g9! which is too high for what it was.
1.6 vw bora 02 plate is g6

someone I know just had a bad accident - his fault, he hasn't realised that his premium will sky rocket, he is now looking at getting a giant jeep/truck thing following his accident, we've not had the heart to tell him he can only afford a micra for the next few years.

I've had modified alfa's since I was about 18 and yes they are expensive to insure. The price comparison sites are rubbish. Adrian flux have always done good by me. Usually £2-300 cheaper than any one else. They also know there stuff with modifying too. Uprated discs and pads saved me £50 as they made the car safer! Now hows about that for an insurance company that knows their onions!

when it comes to Mod's they do seem to be the most accomodating, my brother has my old Focus ST170 (bear in mind he's only 20) and he's written a car off last year (outcome still pending) the car has modded alloys and the premium only went up a small amount really about £100 or so, bearing in mind the premium is about £1500 or so
