Hi may I ask if anyone can help please ? My 99 156 v6 has a problem with temp I think . It drives lovely and has never overheated but it keeps on rising from the middle to the three quarters mark and it seems to cool down to normal almost instantly . The heater blows hot and the coolant is full .The rad looks like new and was replaced a few years ago .The car has done 82k . Any help would be greatly appreciated . Thank you

First of all, check the real temperature using a KKL cable and FiatEcuScan (free) - the gauge might be showing bogus values. Quite unlikely in your case, but possible.
Second, your fan's first speed, which should kick in around 95 C, is probably not working - broken fuse or relay, cheap and easy to fix.
Test: warm up your car to about 90 C, then pull over, leave engine idling, pull the bonnet up and wait until the fan starts spinning - if it doesn't start at or around 95 and only kicks in when the needle reaches the 3/4 mark (should be 110 C), then you've got the fuse/relay issue.

Hi I have just let it run and the drivers side fan came on but not the passenger side one .I left it ticking over for an hour and the temp got between the 90 in middle and the red .Then the one fan kicked in .Should both fans work ? Many thanks I really appreciate your help .

Yes, both fans should work on the high speed setting (i.e. when the engine is reaching 110 C). I'd say blown fuse, but I'm no specialist. There's a procedure somewhere on how to shunt (skip the fuse/relay) the fan - if it works like that, then the fan itself is OK, but your fuse is not.
Just wondering if both fans show also be spinning on the low-speed setting - that might explain why your engine temperature goes so high (one fan on low-speed cannot cope with it). Anyone?

It would be great if someone could help with the relay bypass thing as I dont want to fork out for a water pump lol . I think it may be the fan for two reasons the first being only one fan is working and two the temp seems to right itseft with seconds . It was at 100 ish this side of a roundabout and back down to 90 on the other . Thank you please help!! lol

Hi Ihave just started the car up from cold and after a few seconds the drivers side fan kicks in but not the passenger side . I have read about resisters on top of the rad but cannot find any .Do the relays just pull out as I can not seem to move them . Sorry for being a pain I need to do the school runs in the am and want a temp fix . Thanks again

Each fan resistor pack is held into the fan mechanism of the radiator by two cross head screws. Remove these and it will allow the resistor pack to be pulled from the fan unit. If one of the green resistor coils has fallen out then that fan will not come on. You can either replace the resistors, or unplug the resistor packs and join the two wires that go into it. There are two resistor packs, one at the top and one at the bottom of the fan mechanism. You'll struggle to reach the bottom one without coming from below.
