Hi All

First post so please be nice:)

Basically my beloved 156 selespeed will not start. This happened a few days ago. I was driving and suddenly I heard a clattering noise from the engine and car cut out on me. I tried to re-start but no go. Had the car towed back home. So I invested in a cable to do some diagnosis + software fiat ecu scan. I retrieved a fault code of P0725 issue with transmission. Did not searching and many users mentioned the issue is with crank shaft sensor. So today got the part and fitted it + cleared the fault code, but the car still does not start. Checked the ECU but now have a different fault code of P1763 CAN line message. When I try to start the car I can hearing ticking over but it does not start up.

Please help I'm scared:confused:. Any ideas?

Hearing a mechanical noise prior to the engine cutting out does not bode well. I would check the cambelt, as it may well have failed. First, have a quick look behind the cover to see if anything obvious is wrong, then get someone to turn the engine over while you watch the belt - is it going round?

Yep - it's the cam belt. Oh I'm sooo happy:cry:. Just tried starting the car and view the engine through the oil filter cap and it does not turn over but the belt does spin. My mechanic mate said it is game over. Nevermind the car is over 144k and 10 years old. Time to put on ebay for parts.

I loved that car. I'm a bit upset now but every cloud ... going onto buy another used 156 :).

Great site keep posting.

Another victim of the tspark cambelt problems. When was it last done and were all tensioners and waterpump done at the same time? Its suposed to be every 36,000 miles. You could always repair it. Valves, belt and all tensioners, waterpump and shells for the bottom end.

I don't have the technical patience to do the repairs, anyway it took me over 4 hours to replace the crank sensor :(.
Anyway my mechanic mate has said it would cost upto 1k to do, but the car is only worth 1k that was before this issue. Last cambelt change was at 80k - slap wrist my fault it was scheduled to go in but I forgot to do it. I'm now paying the price. What is the best place online to get another alfa?

80k to 144k is 64k you were 28k over the sheduled change! I'm amazed it lasted that long! Piston heads have very nice alfa's. Some on here too
