147 Clutch

The clutch on my 45,000 mile 147 is very juddery when its cold but fine when its hot. Also there is a little free play at the top of the pedal stroke.
Are the two things related does anyone think? I can find the slave cylinder but i assume the bleed nipple is covered by the rubber thing which i didn't manage to get off!

Anyhow, the clutch judder is the main issue to sort!

the t-sparks do suffer from clutch judder from what i understand. The slave and master are self adjusting so they sort themselves out. If they are knackered you'll know as they will leak fluid and put you handbrake light on. My 155 has had a judder ever since i've had it. And i've changed the clutch, master and slave over the years which have made no difference. I wouldn't worry too much. COuld just be coming up for a new clutch????

Hi Joss, to me the inch or so off free play at the top of the pedal means it might need bleeding although it doesn't appear to be loosing fluid from the reservoir. Its worth a try before changing the clutch!
My pal who had a Fiat Punto had clutch judder issues and ended up with getting it changed three times under warrenty. Turns out to be a common flywheel problem on this car- now i know Fiat and Alfa have a relationship somewhere along the line so i wonder if clutches etc share any common parts?

Ah yes an inch is quite a lot of free play! Sorry when you said a little I though you meant a little. That is more like a lot! The flywheel was mentioned to me when I queryied it. I think it can be due to high spots or poor alignment with the clutch. Ultimately its more of an annoyance than the end of the world.

Quite unusual for it to judder when cold but be ok when hot. Usually (and I'm talking all makes here) it's the other way round. Is the clutch releasing fully? As you say you have excessive free play I wonder if the clutch is dragging slightly, then as you use it pumps up a bit. It could even be someting as silly as slightly rusty input shaft spline which loosens up with use. At 45,000 you may be nearing the end of the clutch's life which may explain the whole thing. Incidently, the fiat punto uses an entirely different clutch and gearbox except in HGT guise, when it's virtually the same. It's quite true these are very judder prone due to the weak front bearing in the gearbox, but this does not apply to any Alfa boxes. Fiat and Alfa are not associated they are the same company!

My 147 2.0 has done 80 000

when i accelarate the car will change gears fine, but when i slow down i cant get it
out of gear, if i step on the clutch pedal its hard and even when fully pressed the revs remain high, as if the gear has not disengaged.

a tap on the accelarator usually lets the gear go, and i can then stop. once stopped i cant get the car into a gear and i sometimes need to put it off, put into 1st and start up again.

Once i start it even with the clutch in, the car wants to move forward. a tap on the accelarator usually resets it again.

I have replaced the master clutch cylinder, but this has made no difference. The clutch system has also been bled.

ideas ?

on a similar note, sorry to butt in, my clutch has about an inch of free play if not more at the top of the stroke, where it does nothing, just floppy, usually when iv been using the car a while, but not always. its actually quite random:rant:

sometimes the pedal is normal, sometimes i get this freeplay, whether iv been driving a while or not, sometimes it starts like that then returns to normal and vice versa. but mostly when everything is warm.

dying clutch maybe?? theres no judder or slip, and it works fine with the little retardation i do get after the freeplay in the pedal, just really annoying:mad:
