Hi, I have recently purchased an Alfa 156 2.4 JTD. Often when I start the car the air con button LED (the one with the snow flake on it) illuminates and I can here a fan running. I press the button and the fan noise stops and the led on the button goes off. The next time I start the car the led is on and the fan is running again? This happens about 80% of the time. I did read somewhere about a proceedure operating the ignition switch and aircon switch in a certain sequence to stop this re-occuring? Can someone please help? I'm sure I read a thread about this problem a month or two ago?

Its in the handbook buddy, it works too. A sequence of turning the key to MAR then setting the climate control dials in a ceretain position then turning the fan speed dial from o to 4 to o to 4 again or something like that:confused:
Anyway like I said its in the handbook:thumbs:

To quote from the manual:-

Switching compressor control from automatic to manual.

1. ignition key to stop position
2. turn heat control to full right(max)
3. turn fan speed to 0
4. direction knob to full left (face?)
5. turn ignition switch to MAR (the position before engine starts)
6. turn fan speed Auto-0-Auto-0
7. turn ignition key to stop

It should now be set to manual control, to reset it to automatic you need to repeat the same sequence.

Ideally air con/climate control is meant to be on all the time. That's why manufacturers program vehicles to do this. Reason is the gas contains oil which lubricate the seals and other parts in the air con system. When it's on, the seals and other parts are being lubricated which prevents them from drying out and breaking down. I leave mine on all the time as recommended. It really doesn't consume as much extra fuel as people perceive. If you do switch the AC system off then it is recommended that you turn it on once a week for 10 minutes to lubricate the seals. Else one day when you really need it you'll find it won't work and they aren't cheap to repair.

Thanks 156Chris, your info was spot on. I notice that you also have a 10V 2.4 JTD that has been tuned by AMH. What did they do, would you reccommend them, what was the cost, where are they located. I've heard good things on this forum about Celtic, Angel, Alfa tune and Red dot but all seem pricey for what is essentially a remap of the existing ECU i.e software?
I'm based in Orpington, North kent, so if anyone knows of a good Alfa specialist / or garage close to me plus any that should be avoided, I'd be grateful for the info.

thewizardhunter, thanks for you reply. I appreciate what you say about circulating the oil etc all good and valid advice, but there's one thing I'm quizzing over. As you probabaly know there's a pressure switch incorporated into the air con circuit that will not allow the compressor engage if the system is coolant gas presure is too low (leak) or high (over filled). I bought my car two weeks ago and although the led on the button illuminates the compressor does not kick in (normally you'd hear a click as most have an electro-magnetic clutch, crude but effective). Anyhow, I'm sure I require a re-gas and I'm hoping there isn't a massive leak somewhere?? Now, although the compressor doesn't engage the blower fan in the car turns itself on even though its speed control is at zero? Is this normal?? Never experienced this in other cars.
