Roof Bars for 156SW without Rails

Hi,

Cant be the first to be asking, just wanting to confirm...

My 156SW doesnt have roof rails, and I've seen conflicting reports of if they are available. Local Alfa Dealer wants to spend c £600 to retro fit longtitudal rails, which is too excessive for me. (Could buy an Volvo 850T for that money with rails already fitted)

I have heard reports of being able to use the 156 Saloon Roof Bars (ie the ones that clamp onto the door opening) as the roof shape for saloon and sw is the same ?

Not planning on carrying much, (couple of kayaks), and not very far, but too far to walk / paddle.

Any 156SW owners out there able to confirm compatibility / options ?

Thks

The longtitudal bars are not easily retro-fitted to an Alfa as the roof skin will not have been pre-drilled and the strengthing plates may or may not have been fitted - for a Volvo it is a case of undoing four blanking screws and bolting down - I have done this.

The cross beams used on the saloon do also fit the SW - if you check under the rubber strip just above the door you should find a small bolt head which is the locator for the beams.

I believe the SW with roof bars factory fitted has a reinforced roof to cope with the potential weight/drag. Remeber when you are traveling along with a kayak or such you will be creating lift too. Could be costly if they rip a hole in your roof and strike another vehicle or pedestrian.
