Another whats that noise thread...
Apologises for starting another, but I couldn't find anything to help me.
There is a strange noise that appears to be coming from the Exhaust/Cat area of the car. It only tends to happen around 2500/3000 rpm and if I press the clutch it will stop making it straight away.
Its a metalic sound, like a rattle. I'll try and make a recording tomorrow.

Hmmm, that does not sound good...
I always thought it was something rattling around inside the CAT. As I said, it only occurs between 2500 and 3000 rpm.

could well be ,but if putting clutch down silences it,strong possibility its clutch or main shaft ,but can only go by what youve described
only way is get it on ramps and have a closer listen and make sure everything is secure

Why don't you get under the car a give the cat a shake. It would not be the pressure plate but input shaft bearing,
easy test at idle
Noise
Press clutch noise dissapears
Input shaft bearing worn

Did a quick test this morning, with the car in neutral. There was no noise.
At the weekend I will get it up in the air and test it again out of neutral.

so llet me get this straight first
you get a vibration at 2500/3000 revs and it goes when
1. when your holding revs at this in neutral or
2. when your driving car in gear and it goes when you put clutch in to change gear

Ok I'll get the front end in the air this weekend and give everything a good shove to see if anything is loose.

Not had the chance do it yet, but thinking about it. The car has made the noise ever since I had the down-pipe/flexi-pipe replaced....

The sound is more pronounced when under strain - going uphill.

No. I'm hoping for a dry weekend this week, so I can get the front end up in the air and play about with it. My current thinking its either the variator or a bit of crap in the exhaust.
My Belts are due a change in a few months anyway, so the Variator could well be it. But the sound seems to come from underneath the car. As of yet I've been unable to re-create the sound when the car is standing still, even with the front wheels in the air.

i'm getting exactly the same noise / twitchy bum when i'm pulling uphill in 1st + 2nd. its going into an alfa specialist soon anyroad as i've just bought the car and want them to give it a right good seeing too, for peace of mind. after reading loads of threads on here i'm thinking variator / heat shield too. i'll let you know what they say and vice versa. Hi all by the way. just bought my first Alfa. 1998 GTV 60000m. fingers crossed i'll never cheat on alfa with another car brand!.

Last time I had a rattle like you described it was my Cat breaking and vibrating internally. Took it off and bashed the hell out of it got rid of the honecomb and refitted. Cured the problem . However, will fit new Cat to get through the MOT.
