Indicator / Hazard Problem

Hi all. Posted this as a reply to an older thread, but thought I'd post as a separate one as well.....

I have a problem on my facelifted 156 (Jan 2003 registration).

Since November, both my indicators and hazards have been working intermittently. Some mornings they don't work (or do eventually by the time I get to work), sometimes they don't in the evenings as well. They flash fine when unlocking and locking the car. At the same time they don't work, the hazards do not work either. If the indicators work, then the hazards do as well.

Assumed it was related to the cold weather, but it has got warmer recently, and this week they haven't worked at all, so I think they have gone completely now. As it's always both the indicators and the hazards could this be the relay?

If it is the relay, is it easy to inspect / replace? Presumably it is near the fusebox under the drivers side, and just needs to be pulled out? Is it obvious which one it is (or marked somehow)?

Another thread talks about cleaning connections in the engine with WD40, but I have no idea what these might be.

Any help appreciated.

Well, they don't work for a week, then this morning they are both fine, all the way to work. Only difference is went for a long run on Saturday. They didn't work then, left the car on Sunday, then this morning all OK.

This has happened before; when a longer than usual run in the car brings them back to life for a time. Does this point to moisture somewhere, or a low voltage of the battery causing problems (and a longer run in the car charging the battery a bit)?

The battery is 7 years old now.......But car starts fine and doesn't feel sluggish. Battery light indicator is black, but has been for years.

Probably won't work tonight now.........

Hi Steve

My indicators/hazzards packed up recently and after eliminating all of the obvious things it turned out to be a dry joint on a connector block (possibly D21 which is up above the glovebox iirc). Perhaps this could be your problem as a dodgy connection would work sometimes but not others?

Best bet is to get it looked at by a decent auto electrician.

Keep us posted if it happens again as I may be able to get hold of some wiring diagrams for you.
