revs at low revs!!!!!!!

hi all

the car struggles to stay started when changing gear or when coming to a stop revs go up and down. some times it stalls when i first start the car. it is fine until i touch the accelerator and i can hear a ticking sound. im sure the ticking is only there when the revs are up and down looked through other posts and found 1 that matched my fault perfectly and then went on to say about cutting a wire to fix the problem didnt like that idea please help! it's driving me nuts !!
