No sele pump noise ?

Hi when I open my drivers door I cannot hear the pump although at the moment there are no problems with the gearbox.
If the pump has gone will there be problems immediately ?
Thanks

If the pump doesn't run, you won't be able to select any gears and assuming you have done the correct thing and parked it in gear, you won't be able to select neutral and start the engine.

As David C says, however, if its operating properly the pump wont run everytime you open the door only when the pressure falls below bottom limit

Just picking up on something you say, David - is it better to manually select neutral to start the engine, or should I just keep turning the key and letting the car do it?

It will run every time the door opens up to 10 times without starting the engine.
The 11th time you open the door without starting it, the pump will not run and won't run again until you turn the ignition on.

I always manually select Neutral before starting it.
I also wait for the fuel & Selespeed pumps to stop after tuning the ignition on before starting.

Yeah, I always wait for at least the Sele pump to stop priming before starting up.

My starting ritual:

Open the door
listening to the pump (there it is, everything fine so far)
getting comfortable in fine black leather seats, in the meantime counting to ten, then pump stops.
meanwhile the key is in, now starting up the computer (ignition on), reads "checking", during which i buckle up
the lightshow dimms, now starting up the engine (enjoing the sound)
now i wait till the "OK" comes up, then we are ready to go....

Once upon a time i had a Toyota Prius, which didn't like it, when i did something before the Computer signaled "Ready", so there you, old habits....

To be on topic again: My pump needs exactly 9 seconds after a longer standstill and it does not prime when i open the door again a couple of minutes later (longer than 5, its start for only a few seconds).

Has the dashlights dimming something to do with a battrey getting poor?

the other thing to check is the sele relay, which sits between the thermostat and battery, under the intake hose. Try swapping with another suitable rated one (IIRC the engine fan uses the same one) and see it it makes a difference. Some seasoned sele drivers carry a spare relay just in case.

If it does not then the pump is looking like prime suspect, this too can be checked by disconnecting the plug and running plus and minus wires to the battery terminals, a deathly silence will confirm.

Relay is in front of the battery in a 156.
It will be one of the big 50A relays.
