156 1.8ts radiator fan running all the time

My radiator fan runs all the time a soon as engine starts. The temperature guage readings are ok and behaves normally.Ive replaced the resistor in radiator cowling. The air con is switched off.The relay to bring in the fan is being energised straight away before engine gets hot!!Where does that relay get supplied from?

Think it gets it from the ECU, which gets it from the sensor in the thermostat. When this is unplugged, you'd expect the fan to run all the time.

Check the plug's on ok, and the contacts are clean. It might need replaced (£12 or so). Not sure if its failure would bring on the engine management light or not though...

BTW, the temp gauge sender is in the same sensor (unless it's a very early 156), but is a different 'feed' than the one the ECU gets...

My 147 has a similar problem but only intermitently. Sometimes when I start the car the radiator fan starts and the engine management light comes on. Do you think this could be the sensor in the thermostat too?

Did you discover the problem mate? My 2.0ts is having the same problem. I've replaced the temp sensor but the fan still runs as soon as you turn the ignition on. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes I fixed problem by replacing temperature sender unit. The sender unit does two functions. One part does temperature guage the other part controls fan (when it gets too hot in traffic etc)The part of the sender(internally)for fan operation was open circuit so the Ecu thinks there is a problem and defaults to fan operation.Checking the sender it may be easier to replace!.Also check plug in connector to the sender.Hope this helps. If air con selected the fan may run as well.

Check the inside of the plug for corrosion. One I've just sorted was oxidised up. Quick clean with meths and it was ok.

I think it does. Coming from a Merc that had separate air con fans on the front of the radiator and an engine mounted viscous coupled fan on the behind the radiator the first thing I did when I noticed the fan was on (shortly after starting the engine) when buying the car was to turn the air-con off - fan stopped then. Just normal air-con operation.

Try it - see if it makes a difference.

As in the plug to the fan? I'll have a look at that and the one on to the temp sender as well and give them a clean up.

I've checked all the plugs now, no corrosion in any of them. I've now replaced the temp sender, thermostat, fan resistor and I've tried swapping the relays around but the fan still runs when it shouldn't be! Anyone got any ideas? The only thing I can think of is that there's maybe some dodgy wires somewhere?
