Hi,
My Alfa 156 cuts or out or fails to start every now and then, the worst cutting out at busy junctions ! ERRR LOL !
I have read some threads and they suggest the RPM Sensor. l have found the RPM Sensor (or should I say felt) at the back of the block behind the starter but I have a big problem I can't get the bolt out. I have the cuts, burns and bruises to show for it.
The bolt holdling the sensor in place I am not sure about I have tried 5mm hex heads but with no look.. I have taken the throttle housing off which wasn' to difficult but I still can't get in far enough, the hoses near the gearbox always seem in the way as does various wireing.
I have had a look at takeing the black plastic intakes off at the back of the engine but I cant figure out the rigid pipe at the passenger side it looks fixed lower down to the block ,Is this an engine out Job ? It cant be !
I would be very greatfull of any help. I have also tried the wireing to the MAF that seems ok I have cleaned the earths up on the passenger side and also checked the reset button for the fuel cut off under the seat.
Any recomendations for the right tools and the best way to tackle this or how to get the plastic intakes off the back of the engine.

Thanks:confused:

Just to update anyone with a cutting out Alfa 156 - Mine was exactly what I had read up on the forums a RPM sensor fault - Car cuts out any time and anywere when the revs go low the RPM sensor was the problem.
Mine seems totaly sorted with this changed (So far) - Anyway two weeks later and its all working fine - Who would think a £35.00 part from Alfa would sort the problem - Its not an easy job but not a major one either - I can have started to enjoy driveing the ALFA again.

hi

i have been having some "cut out" problesm with my 2.0 T-Sprak 156. Drives normal, and no management lights, then all of the sudden it cuts out, then wont start again, it wants to start, but something wont let it. leave it for around 10 mins and will start again, but the management light comes on. Can you share if these symptoms are simillar to those you had?
I am now hoping it is the RPM sensor, and nothing more serious.. i love my alfa..

RPM Sensor

Hi, It was the RPM sensor with mine which is at the back of the engine near the gearbox - Its you have to the throttle housing off and the sensor is either help on with a hex bolt or a normal bolt. Its can be done from underneath also. The wireing to the unit is at the top of the engine at near the injectors. You will nead to unbolt the cam cover then unbolt the throttle housing and one of the air filter pipes for easy access and then if working from above. Reach down with a hex key or socket unbolt the RPM unit and then detatch the wireing from the top ( It should be the brown plug to to detach at the top of the engine.
The part is £35 or there abouts from Alfa. A garage shouldnt charge much for this job though.
This apparentli is a common problem on the older ones also they say the TDC sensor goes but whether it presents the same fault I do not know. The MAF can also go but I nthink that gives a general lack of power and performance.
