ideally around 85-90, but some gauges are out when compared to plug in diags, if its up to the 80 make you may not be far off when compared to diags, but it really should be hitting 90 in hot weather, maybe more if you really rag it!

The temp gauge should go to the middle in heavy traffic even if the stat is stuck open which it sounds like it is. Its a common problem. I have been meaning to do mine for the last 6 months. Its just sat on kitchen side Lol. As for smudgers, i recon your gauge is out slightly as jasons said

156 2.4 JTD sportwagon

I have just had a diesel sportwagon for a coule of weeks now, and the temp gauge never semes to climb that much either. I thought it was because the revs seems so low.... at over 60, revs are jsut over 2k. Maybe my rev counter is reading low.
Anyway - is changing the stat that difficult? I had a quick look - its on the right hand side of the engine, underneath a couple of other 'things' !!
I used to have a Rover 25 - and changing the stat on that was a nightmare - almost involving removing the entire inlet manifold

My JTD only registers just passed the first notch as well, and has done from new. Every single checkover the car has had from the dealers the temp has been checked and all was ok.

If the car runs fine and mpg is ok, don't worry about it. These dials are not accurate anyway. Spend your time worrying about something more imminently collapsible on these Alfas, like the suspension, the radiator, the dodgy brakes, rev counters that go zing and lead to flat batteries, duff EGR valves (and the solenoid), and more dodgy suspension.

I do wonder sometimes with all these threads on 'low' temp readings if this all a little bit neurotic?

My heater was always crap engine took ages to warm up needle never going much past 60. Changed thermostat, now quick warm up, temp gauge just sits to the left of the 90 mark. Dodgy thermostats seem to be endemic on Alfas.

Never ever had a stat go on any car I've owned except every single one of my three Alfas.

Alfa Romeo 156 1.9 JTD

When I got mine (1.9 16V JTD) it only got to the first knotch, I searched on here and it shoulg get to 90ish on the guage and stay there. so i ordered a new stat and fitted it. Been perfect ever since.
If the engine is showing as cold the ECU will be running in cold engine mode and will be pumping in more fuel in order to try and heat up the engine.

On the 1.9 16V JTD its an easy enough job that doesnt take long as its on the side of the block at the front near the battery.
Plastic cover off, battery out (not a requirement but it provides more space) disconnect pipes (breaking the clips so have some new ones) and the stat is on two bolts. put back together and refill the system.

got the new stat from shop4parts

156 JTD 10v

Just changed the stat on mine this weekend took 25 min to take the old one off and about 30 min to refit and refill. The car is a 2.4 JTD 10v yr 2000. Got the part from alternative autos £49 + VAT. The car now warms up to just under 90 and never drops below, need to sort the radiator now as it rises to 95 - 100 while on the motorway. As Buzz^^ stated above the car will be more econimic with the thermostat working.

Alfa 156 2.4 JTD + Q2!!!!

If the car stays at a constant temp (stationary vs motorway speed) then it is likely that your stat is fine and it is a mismatch between the gauge and the sender ... my temp was always 70, so I changed my stat and sender and now it sits at 88 ... however I tested the old stat and it was fine ... therefore it must have been the sender that was either reporting slightly out of range data or just a bad earth on it ...

I've done a thread detailing the inside workings of the gauge and sender ...

If you are unsure find someone with the Alfadig software who can check what tempreture the ECU is seeing when the car is at operating tempreture - if this is lower than 85 then you will need a new stat if higher then everything is okay
