Heater Fan

The cooling fans on my 156 tend to turns themselves on at idle when the A/C is switched on, even if the temp gauge is showing nowhere near 90deg. The fans will then turn off straight away if I turn off the A/C button.

Was wondering if this is normal behaviour? It's a bit puzzling as the fans behave normally when the A/C is off (i.e. they swich on just over an indicated 90deg), making me think that it's not a rad problem (I'm not seeing over heating), but could be some sort of electrical/sensor problem?

I've checked the water temp sensor reading in Alfadiag and although the gauge is reading less than the actual temperature everything looks ok.

Car is idling a bit rough in general at the moment and am wondering if this is somehow related

cheers
Gav.

EDIT: Title should be "cooling fans"..
