good points Rick, but i'm not sure the brand is important, they recommend the viscosity value and type, rather than who makes it,as a guess

Sorry to be pedantic Dave, but as bazza says, they do recommend the brand too!
I think my Alfas have always had a Selenia sticker under the bonnet, and my 145QV manual has two full pages on why to use Selenia, and in the recommended lubricants section it states:
Selenia 20k SAE 10W40
or
For sports type driving Selenia Racing 10W60
or
For use under particularly harsh weather conditions, Selenia Performer 5W30

Also, a Warning:
"Do not top up with a different engine oil than the already existing one".

As bazza says, if you are cynical, you can say this is a ploy to sell more Selenia oil, but then again, I can't say don't use it. My cars live outside in a cold area, get used very hard (23mpg average from 145QV, 34mpg from 156JTD), and I have always used Selenia 20k...

Ferrari uses Shell in F1 -> they recommend Shell
Mclaren Mercedes uses Mobil1 -> Mercedes recommends Mobil1 (Porsche recommends Mobil1 too)
Williams BMW uses Castrol -> BMW recommends Castrol
... the same story with Alfa Romeo

All the best

I have now had 16v 2.0 twin sparks for seven years and cumulatively 90,000 miles, and I accept what the manufacturer tells me, and I do exactly what it says in the book, and I have had no problems. I am really sick of people banging on about what they consider "rubbish" because the car doesn't match their preconceived, narrow minded opinions.

If you are using the recommended oil and you are getting figures worse than 1 litre per 1000 kms, you have a problem. If it isn't, then you haven't. My dealer made it quite clear to me when I purchased the car (because I queried him on oil consumption) that if I have any significant oil consumption after the first 2000km that I should bring the car in.

aiculedtzu,

Thanks for the link.
My dealer, Co-op Nottingham, uses Shell Helix for Alfa services.
