156 jtd and mobil1 turbo diesel oil?

I've got a cheap(ish) line on mobil1 0-40 turbo diesel oil, anyone use this or able to recommend or warn me off it for a 1.9 jtd?

0-40 should be fine - I have always used 5-40 though, I'm pretty sure it won't do any harm if it has been well maintained in the past! After changing the oil keep an eye on the level to make sure it is not drinking it or leaking it like Oliver Reed at the bar!

keep a good cjheck on the level and a litre in the back of the car. It may be Ok, but if its realy thin it may use more through the turbo etc.

Why take the chance? it's just not worth it, use what is recommended.

Fair comment and you're probably right, however I wonder how many forum members use Selenia semi synth? The fully synth, top quality mobil1 is almost a third of the price... Just thought it was worth asking the guys.

I have just had an oil change on mine done by my indie. I asked him to use what ever oil he thought was good enough. He has a supplier he uses that he makes some profit from using, who supplies equal quality oil. In my car he used Selenia. He made less on it as he has to get it from Alfa. The reason he used it was that he couldn't be confident the other oil was exactly the same match as the Selenia. It's not an issue in the petrols, it was something to do with what is needed for the diesels.

I can't see any reason why it won't be ok. providing it meets the correct ACEA and API specs.

A 0w-40 is the same viscosity as a 10w-40 at operating temperature.

Also a 0w-40 is virtually the same viscosity as a 5w-40 when cold but its pour point (the temperature which it solidifies due to cold) is lower.

As far as oils at dealers/good indies go, they usually only have 2 (perhaps 3 at really big places) huge drums (1000ltr? or so) of oil, which do nearly all veghicles, turbo and N/A.
I could name a very well respected indie for porche, mercedes and BMW which has ouil supplied by 1 major company and 2 types does all. (same for VW, skoda and Audi)

Its the viscosity and synthetic properties which determine engine type or iul life - 10or20k intervals.

You just need to be sure its not too thin for the motor/turbo.
