Frozen gearbox?!

I have a 2001 Alfa 156, which staretd ok this monring despite the cold, but i could not get it into gear. it 'wiggled' about normally in neutral, but when the clutch was down it would not go into any gear. I've never had any trouble with the gears previously.

Tried it again after work this afternoon when it was (slightly) warmer and the gears all worked as normal. Is it possible that the gearbox had frozen?!

Re: Frozen gearbox?!

Its more likely the linkeage.

What engine is your 156? As some have cable linkeage others have a rod setup.

If water gets into either and freezes it may make the gearchange stiffen up.

Thanks for your reply, It's a 2.0 (petrol).

Is there much I could do to stop it from freezing up again?

You could get under the car and spray it with WD40, that should help drive out the moisture.

It will also help lubricate it.
