Help Tyres..... Again

OK here's one.

I am looking at options to buy new tyres for my 1.9 JTD GT. I have seen lots of comments on here about certain tyres and everyone has different opinions. However, I am looking for a specific characteristic, mileage.

I currently have some Eagle F1 GSD3's (too noisy) on the front and Bridgestone RE050 Potenza on the rear.

I do not want to challenge for lap times or become the next Nuvolari, but I spend a lot of time on the motorway so sound is a consideration, but wear is the greatest, as I do 30k per year.

I have bought Michelin Primacy's in the past for other cars but I do not think they make them to fit the Alfa. Anyone got long distance experience?

BTW I have 17"'s

Re: Tyres..... Again

Are you sure it's the GSD3's that are noisy as the Bridgestones I had on mine were as noisy as hell.

I now have F1 Asymmetrics, superb tyre but I don't expect them to last like a Michelin, but for me it was grip not mileage.

Re: Tyres..... Again

Pirelli P Zero Nero are the factory fitted tyre.

However, I have heard many good reports on the vredestein ultrac sessanta, but haven't used them myself so have no personal experience of them.

I don't think the Sessanta is made in the Alfa size 215/45/17 only the Ultrac (older version)

Worth a look on Pneus-Online for tyre comparison.

Use 225/45R17 then, which is the 3.2V6 size.
They are a stronger tyre and often cost less than the 215/45R17 too.

Correct as they are a very common size BMW's & VW's especially. I think the 215 was std on Imprezas

Re: Tyres..... Again

goodyear excellence were good on my previous car running a 225.40.18 and where fairly low noise level. Have a read of the reviews for them.

Hi Vindaloo, I am convinced it is the Eagle F1 GSD 3's as the noise has only been there since they were fitted.

I have been considering these and are at the top of my list currently for 215/45/17 size.

I think the Verdestiens are directional like the GSD 3's therefore likely to be more noisy, plus aren't they a high performance tyre, therefore unlikely to wear well?

Hi David, do these fit OK? I thought of this but was concerned about the tyre rubbing. Is this not true?

Hi alphaTS56 I cannot find these here in the UK, but I would go back to Michelin Primacy's if I can use the a 225/45/17 size. They did everything required very well.

Thanks for everyone's help, any more info gratefully received and any experience with Dunlop, Bridgestone or others?

Re: Tyres..... Again

Can the non-GTA 147/156 use 225/45/17 tires without rubbing on the wheel arches? That's an easier size to find than 215/45/17.

Re: Tyres..... Again

I replaced all 4 Bridgestone Potenzas after 18000 miles, and now have ZR Goodyear F1 GSD3 fitted, and they are superb. Much quieter than the Potenzas too.....

Re: Tyres..... Again

I read a few threads about tyres on here and went for the Falken FK 452s. Had them on for about 1000 miles and doing ok. No probs with excessive noise or grip. Cost £80 a piece.
