147 Exhaust corrosion

New to this posting business so please forgive any howlers!

Has anyone else suffered from a corroded / discoloured silencer on a 147 Selespeed after 4 months and 9500 miles (I can't get enough of my baby!)?

Excepting the above, this is undoubtedly the best car I have ever had the pleasure of owning!

Barty, welcome to the forum!

I personally have a nice and shiny exhaust tip that blocks (at least partly) the blunt view on the silencer box (imho, this is a design flaw of the 147!).

See:

I haven't noticed any corrosion yet, but that can also be because it is less in sight with an exhaust tip like this. Got it from my dealer, and I can advise anyone to do thesame!

Hi Barty
Welcome to AO!!
http://www.smilies.nl/wave.gif
Most 147's I see have a slightly sad looking back box. Unfortunatley, the back box is quite big, and it is highly visible past the rear valance. Dave is right - your best bet might be to get an exhaust finisher to disguise it. Failing that, get it up on axle stands and paint it.
Last resort, visit the shop and treat yourself to a stainless job!

It is a very common problem. A lot of 147's have this problem and lot of them don't.

Like mentioned above, treat yourself with a backbox, it improves the sound and looks of your bella. If it is too expensive buy an exhaust tip: looks great and makes the opening in the bumper better filled which blocks the vision on the backbox a bit.

Has anyone tried using exhaust paint to cover up the corrosion? I don't know if this paint is only supposed to be used as a prevention before the exhaust has started to rust. Would the rust cause the paint to peel off?

I really think that it spoils the look of the car because the box is so highly visible.

My blackbox is more like a grey/brown box. It seems that all the grid/salt has transformed the looks of my exhaust ...

But my exhaust tip is still shiny

Gives your car a superb shine! €23 for normal wax, €45 for teflon wax

i do this every 6 months

I'm a real "handjobber" myself. If only we had this kind of wash-heavens in the backroom of our country
