147 2.0 TS Lusso or 1.9 JTD 16V Mjet lusso

Hi

Just a post to see what all your thoughts were on the above two model choices. In your opinion what would be the better model to go for and why. Performance obviously a match. Mpg better on the JTD.

Any comments, greatly appreciated

Whats your budget? All depends on budget, as obviously you'll get a lot more of the petrol car for your money. If you have a big budget, get a diesel.

Also depends on how many miles you do. The Diesel will cost more to buy so you will need to do more miles (At a higher MPG) to get your money back.

The Diesel can be remapped quite easily to give much more performance than standard, the TS isn't as tuneable. However the TS sounds much better.

I'm not doing high mileage. It's a second car. I have a company car for the moon miles. Just want something reliable fast with this italian styling. Probably spend about 5-6K on it.

agree, all down to milage and how you want to drive it.

TS - sweet engine note, and free reving engine :-P 320 per tank

JTDm 16v - more tourqe better for everyday drive and high miles, if you drive with spirit you will only get about 450 per tank

I've had both and all I can say it the TS is a smoother car, lighter clutch. the JTD (16v) version with a remap will still put a big grin on your face as you use all the low end power :-)

By remap I presume you mean chipping. From what I've seen, that would appear only to add about 20 Bhp. Is that really worth it. I know with other makes, chipping can mean new gearboxes and a whole list of other perfomance upgrades. Can you just remap? excuse my ignorance on this one.

Nope, he means remapping - having a professional tuner write a new ignition and fuelling map onto the cars current ECU. Chipping is fitting a chip with different ignition and fuelling maps to the car, you don't need to do this on newer cars.

On a normally aspirated petrol engine you are unlikely to see even 10bhp, nevermind 20bhp, but its the increased smoothness and responsiveness that makes it worthwhile, plus maybe 10-15 NM of torque from 1,000 to 5,500rpm or so. Free up the air intake and exhaust and then get it remapped for bigger gains at the top end of the rev range.

Unlikely you'll ever need to do anything with the gearbox though.

do alfa do this, or do you recommend any particular tuners that you can trust to get the job done right. Also do you know of a rough cost of remapping

Re: 147 2.0 TS Lusso or 1.9 JTD 16V Mjet lusso

The Mjet 16v is a peach, but the TS is a lovely engine too. I like them equally - at the moment.

The point being that emotionally, it's a personal taste thing, and that changes with time.

Financially, whilst the Mjet can be incredibly economical (Want better fuel consumption?) when you you require it to be, if you're only using it as an occasional run around then you're unlikely to get your diesel investment back, so go you should go TS.

No, Alfa don't do it. There are quite a few tuners on here but the forum favourites are probably Red Dot, wo would charge £200-£250. On a JTD the cost would be the same but you'd probably end up with 180-190bhp and maybe 300lbft.

147 JTDm 16v Q2 Mk1 MX5

Re: 147 2.0 TS Lusso or 1.9 JTD 16V Mjet lusso

Having had a 2.0 TSpark 156 & GTV, along with a 3.0 V6 GTV and now a 147 1.9 JTDm 16v Q2 I can honestly say in my humble opinion the JTDm is a terrific all rounder and bearing in mind I went from the V6 to the JTDm (my first diesel) I didn't notice drastic loss of performance which I was anticipating.....add the Shell V-Power Diesel and you'll be amazed.

Enjoy whatever you go for.
