Air intake kits - the Dummies Version

Ok, I've read about improving your throttle response by fitting a K&N filter (or any other make).
Now you can improve it further by making the air flow easier towards that filter. You can achieve this by fitting the air intake of the V6 engine instead of the TS-versions. Is that correct? Would this have the same result as a extremely expensive 'Madeno Air intake system' that costs 250 euros?

And what about all those nice shiny air intake kits that you see from Novitec or Autodelta? In which way could these systems be better than the combination of a new airfilter and the V6 intake?
Or is the only plus that it's shiny?

Please explain this Technology Dumbo
Thanx in advance

As far as I know, the metal intake pipes don't contract under high suction pressure like rubber or plastic ones do. This is more crucial on supercharged or turbo-charged engines that run high boost pressure. (Hence, you see them on modified Skylines and Supras.)

Given the same filter, I don't think the pipe materials will make any difference on our cars, IMO.

Alfa 156 2.4 JTD

Hi,

I've got a plastic Autodelta intake kit, which by the look of it just looks like the original one off a v6.
Basically the new intake replaces the old one which is relatively restrictive and contains a load of baffles to keep it quiet.
Fitting both the intake and new filter to a 156 TS does increase the throttle response, makes it go a bit better and also increase intake noise (in a nice way).
I don't know if this can be done in the same way for a 2.0JTS.

Details of using the v6 intake are on http://www.squadra-tuning.com/Englis...dification.htm

We don't have the V6 engine here in Thailand. (Tax reasons) Which means we'd have to order the parts from international sources. I doubt it'd be worth the trouble for us.

I believe the part itself cost a few euro's only.
I dunno how much shipping a package would cost. Maybe we can exchange. I send you the V6 intake, you send me a grill with those horizontal chrome lines (like in my avatar)

Alfa 147 GTA

May be a silly question but....

would the 156 V6 intake fit a 147 TS Selespeed car?

I mean a Twin Spark engine should be no different between a 156 and a 147 right?

I think the JTD intake is the same as the V6.
Is that available in Thailand??

I have tried something different with my TS. I took off the inlet to the airbox, which is the part which would be replaced by the V6 version. This is a large box with baffles in it. It is basically designed to funnel air into the airbox and reduce the noise on full throttle.
First I ran it just like this - too loud. Then I removed the plastic tube from the inside of the baffle box. This is like a perforated tube. Still a little bit too loud. Next I fitted the baffle material back over the plastic tube. Now I have a nice induction roar under full throttle and maybe a bit more power - all for free.

I'll pass on the intake. I'm quite happy with the semi-restricted one. At least I know no water will get in there during a storm. It rains heavily here during the rainy season.

Ricks, we don't have the JTD, nor the JTS either. Fiat claims the local petrol has too much sulfer content, but I can't really confirm this. That's why they're not bringing the JTS here. The idea of Diesel here is still largely associated with pick up trucks. Our family has a Seat Alhambra TDi, but there are still a small number of diesel passenger cars on the roads here.

Hi Wisrute,

I am still looking for a nice way to get those lines, so if that guy has one (or tips on how to make good ones) I would be interested. I will try to find out how much it costs to send a package from Japan. My soon-to-be-mother-in-law works for a Japanese trading & transport company so maybe she knows

Thanks in advance

LaTiNo</strong><hr /></blockquote><font size="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">LaTiNo: I spent a few hours on Saturday with Apichet to look for those chrome trims that can be made into the inserts. Unfortunately we didn't find anything. But we found stainless steel mesh (sold in meters!)of various sizes. It's a similar square pattern like the one on older Alfa GTA models. I'm still thinking whether that would look nice on a silver 156. (I think it'll look fine on black or red cars.) Maybe I'll pick up a small sheet to try out.
