Re: what size battery???

Go onto Bosch/Varta/Yuasa/Exide sites; they'll show you if you state car. So will a number of the car battery suppliers (trade and retail).

For example:-

http://www.tayna.co.uk/fitments/3/Ca...ent-Guide.html

But have a good look round as you may well save yourself some money!

The one I fitted to my GTV was for a 156 the only difference was where the breather pipe went. That was an AR one but is made by Exide, universal no. 027. Usually about 63 Ah.

You might find that guides show an 085 (44 Ah), which is smaller, and knowing the problems associated with low terminal potential differences on Alfas, the larger one (027) might be a better choice. (p.d is unaffected, but if left hopefully the larger battery would be better).

Don't buy any of the batteries listed for a 2.0TS 156 on that site.
The batteries they list are all physically too small and the strap will not hold the battery tight.
Far too many places list batteries that are 175mm tall.
They need to be 190mm tall.

See here @ the Varta site

Varta D15 is what you want.

Re: what size battery???

Its not just that site, many others also indicate the 085, that is one of the reasons I said/implied to go for the larger (027) battery. Also to go to manufacturers sites.

Re: what size battery???

Well contrary to most opinions voiced sometimes, the Hals' replacement with a four year guarantee, served us admirably for four years, and was still holding charge and performing well when we sold her.: It was also a perfect fit in the cradle. If you do decide to go that route, just flip through the available charts they display for the correct version applicable to your model?:

Re: what size battery???

I agree that buying a well known brand is the easiest way to get a good battery. But,as ZF said, Halfords are good as are Unipart batteries. If you buy the top one of Uniparts 3 choices the battery is gauranteed for as long as you own the car.
Some of the cheap stuff around at factors are absolute rubbish and barely get through their 12 month warranty BTW and they're not that much cheaper.

Re: what size battery???

I didn't list any of the Halfords batteries as they have no size or capacity data on their website.
And Unipart have no information at all, at least none that I can find.

Re: what size battery???

Sorry to hijack this thread, but its the most recently updated and I need an answer quite urgently.
My alfa has been sluggish for the last moth or so, so I took it to the main dealer who suggested replacing the cam belt and variator at a cost of £579. The made no difference, but they now say an Alfa expert says the 2 front cats are blocked and need replacing.
I've been quoted £1000 for this work, but looking on the internet, cat (not Alfa branded) seen to cost around £150 each.
My questions are, am I being ripped of at £1000, and are non branded ones OK? I'm not a serious petrol head (as you can probably tell, so as long as it runs properly, I'm happy).
Appologies again for posting on this thread.

Re: what size battery???

I'm pretty sure the cat you found for £150 is not any of the 2 front cats, and are very likely smaller (less cells) than the original ones. The front cats are made different (metallic core iso ceramic) which makes them more expensive. their job is to heat up quickly and start cleaning your exhaust gasses as soon as possible after a cold start. Onece the engine is warm enough, the main cat takes over this job and the first cats are surplus to requirements...

That said, you might be able to just do away with the front cats altogether, if a manifold from an earlier engine fits.

The battery in my 33 is a Halfords and its been in there for 5 years and looks remarkably like an Exide! Well someone has to make them. It might even surprise some to know that my GTV replacement from a dealer was cheaper than elsewhere.

Re: what size battery???

The old Pug 205 had a 2yr guaranteed Hals battery on it, which my nephew had just replaced the old one with, prior to us taking over ownership. That made three years, but then started to become sluggish. The Halfords close to us have always been obliging with warranty failures, whereas as AF said, some of the cheapos from various sources, are rubbish. And if you return, with a suspect one, often they will test it, and tell you it's fine, until you go back with it time, and time again. Well, that's how I have found it to be so, on a number of occasions in the past?:

Re: what size battery???

Is it worth paying the extra for the higher cold crank 610 amp/63amp hour battery or going for the standard 540/60 ah model?

What's your choice Gazza? I think ours was the lower rated of the two, but not absolutely sure. Worked fine so that was the Hauptsache, for four years.:

I think my original OEM battery was around 400CCA.
I went for the Silver Dynamic D15, which at the time (November 2003) was 62Ah / 600CCA.

Re: what size battery???

I fitted a Halfords battery (choice of two for my JTD). The crank amps is listed in the detail on the website. It fits perfectly, the plastic casing (shape of the battery) is exactly like the original Alfa battery fitted to my car (sans the green/black wear indicator). It was cheaper than the equiv Bosch / Varta / Exide - same warranties if memory serves.

You try and find any technical information (ie Ah, CCA, size) on the Halfords website now.
I can't see any detail info at all.

That's probably to entice us in store,to use their flip charts with all the guff on, and hand over some cash? Just an idea.:

Could be.
But if they had all the info on their website I may be more inclined to go into the store and buy one.
I haven't looked, but I bet the flip charts don't have the details in either.
