Help Alfa 156 dead Need All the help i can get!!

I Currently have a Project Alfa Romeo 156 1.8 TS

And the problems are endless

i need help from all alfa heads to help me get this beast up and running,

Your help would be much appreciated

Heres the Problems:

1: The handbrake is released (the car is on a slope) and the car won't budge!

2:The Brake pedal is very hard and doesnt move far

3: I have managed to get the car started however when it was running for that short period the engine was screeching like mad and i could see small amounts of smoke from the engine. (I've found out its the alternator pulley [seized?] )

Extra info about the car

The cars cambelt snapped a couple of hundred miles ago and fully replaced (valves etc) costing £750.

After the repair the car was used for a short while then has been left on the drive for around 8 months

After that i tryed getting it started and all these problems emerged!!

All help would be dearly appreciated

Also i would like to add i'm only 14 so help Would be dearly Apreciated

The only reason why Alfa Romeo's have pretty engines is because u'll be looking at it every other day!!

Big end is probably on it's way out.

I'd get a donor engine tbh.

Re: Alfa 156 dead Need All the help i can get!!

14 and your pulling cars apart already? Good on you.

Anyway, it sounds like a simple case of your brake calipers seizing on. Not quite so simple to sort unless you are lucky. You may have to strip the brakes down and use a ton of WD40 to get the pistons moving. Also you will need something tro help push them back in.

If you are really lucky and want to risk it you can start the car, put it in first gear, rev the testicals off it and let the clutch go. I cant guarantee that this wont damage something else though.

Good luck

£750 is very cheap for a rebuild.. when the cambelts go in the twinsparkm the big end bearing normally follows a few thousand after the repair unless they have been checked.

Re: Alfa 156 dead Need All the help i can get!!

If you want to make some easy money just break the car for spares, sell the bits on eBay and here, and then scrap the remainder. Thats if your parent's don't mind you cluttering up the drive/garage for a few months.

Getting this back into working condition will probably cost a fair bit, money you probably don't have..

Re: Alfa 156 dead Need All the help i can get!!

Hang on there. I see no evidence of big end failure so what the hell are the rest of you going on about.

It sounds like what it sounds like.

1) Seized calipers...but may only be a seized handbrake cable, so try easing that first.

2)The screeching is probably the belt screeching on the seized alternator pulley, which is not that difficult or serious to sortout.

All this talk of rebuild and new engines is very premature and I think its very wrong of people to frighten the poor lad into thinking the worst when there is a fighting chance its a lot less serious than that.

Advice for the future. If a car is laid up, then chock the wheels and leave the handbrake OFF. Run the engine every couple of weeks to keep bearings/water pumps/oil pumps exercised, and the circulation of oil also prevents rust forming in the bores from condensation. And keep the battery charged up of ocurse or it will wreck itself.

If the car is off the road for age and ages then try and eep the wheels off the ground to avoid flats on the tyres, and keep them pumped up, slightly over the recommended pressures.

I also think you need a good mate who knows a wee bit more than you to help you with the brakes. Brakes are not really for beginners, they are too important.

Good Luck

Re: Alfa 156 dead Need All the help i can get!!

I was wondering what all the doom and gloom was about. I recon it will be a reasonably cheap fix evn though it could be a bit fiddly.

I started with a Mk1 Escort at the age of 16. Some what easier to sort out than an Alfa. Im sure it will be the dogs by the time you can legally drive it.

All the best
