Blinking Mileometer

The mileometer on my 147 1.6TS (2001) is blinking. The last time this happened my battery died within a few days and I had to have it replaced with a new one. However, that was only about 6 weeks ago. Does anyone know if a blinking mileometer signals battery trouble, surely a new battery can't die after just six weeks, or do you think its just one of those temporary electronic glitches. She tends to act up in very wet weather and its been pelting down here in Dublin since the start of June!

Thanks

Re: Blinking Mileometer

It has nothing to do with the battery, it is a bad connection somewhere (been there done that) unplug (all visible) connectors in engine bay , spray with contact spray and plug in again.

Re: Blinking Mileometer

I changed my dials to GT dials and the mileage started blinking. I sold my old dials and the buyer said when he fitted them the mileage was also blinking. I thought this was because the speedo had been changed that the miles blinked and it had to be reset via OBD.

Has cleaning the connections worked?

Normally, a blinking odometer indicates an error during the CAN bus check, i.e. unrecognised or missing devices. Sometimes happens if you turn the ignition key too quick, not allowing the initial can check to finish. Dissapears next time you start then..
That's why you cannot simply add (or change) devices, like adding a connect+ without getting the binking odometer.

Re: Blinking Mileometer

Indeed you cannot connect(or disconnect) intelligent devices just like that. But in my case a corroded connector was the culprit. Changing an odometer will for sure cause a blinking tachometer, Examiner is needed to clear the error and introducing the new device to the ECU.

Well, actually it seems you cannot even add new devices via the Examiner ! That's why you have to use tricks to get rid of the blinking odometer if you f.i. add a connect+ to a car that did not have it.
However, that's a different subject

Re: Blinking Mileometer

Hi Rarebear, glad you enjoyed your trip to Ireland. Speaking of rain, I was unable to do anything on my beloved Alfa this weekend as we had record levels of rain between Friday evening to Sunday evening. Much of North Dublin, where I live, is flooded so took the train this morning. I'll let you knop when I have cleared those connectors.

Re: Blinking Mileometer

So, is it possible to stop the blinking or not then?

Re: Blinking Mileometer

I have the same problem on my 147 150bhp MJet. It started after my battery died on me (I think I left the back door partially open overnight!). Once I had recharged the battery I had a warning message and light for the 'motor control system'. This has now disappeared but my odometer is still flashing on and off. I haven't connected anything to my car or touched any connectors so I don't know why it would be a dodgy connector.
Any ideas how I stop the flashing............please?!!!!!
