Help Help Required: 156 V6 Lift Up Reverse Gear Knob

Hi guys,

I recently purchased a 1998 156 V6 and have noticed something rather horrific sat upon the top of the gear stick. As you see, I say 'sat upon' due to the fact that's all it is, sat on top of the gearstick:

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/c...e/DSC00184.jpg

Now, it's clear then to me that the bloke before hand has put this on for whatever reason he felt fit, but the problem is that it is not screwed on and he's done an extremely half assed job of it. It's almost placed on rather than stuck on. A couple of aggressive gear changes later and this thing will come off in my hands,

Here is a picture of the assembly once the knob is removed:

My question is; Can I just buy the little round gearknob from a breaking 156 V6 and pop / screw it straight on, or will this be more difficult?

Any and all help is appreciated.

Many thanks,
Darren

I am pretty sure the knob just glues on.

You may have a job getting a second hand one as they are virtually impossible to remove without causing damage.

Hmm, what about Halfords aftermarket ones then? Could that be the way to go?

Re: Help Required: 156 V6 Lift Up Reverse Gear Knob

hi, i have a halfords cheap job on mine (same car as yours) theres a pic of it, the problem is the lift up collar dosent fit inside the gearknob properly, you can get any gearknob from any alfa that has lift up reverse from an alfa dealer (which is what i will be doing) for between 50 - 60 quid depending on which you choose and they simply push onto the splines on the shaft which is tapered slightly so it dosent come off easily

Will that one just pop straight on then mate?

If that's the case then I'd be very interested, how much do you want for it?

Cheers,
Darren

Yep, just a push fit onto the gear stick, might need a bit of araldite it wasn't damaged when I removed it.

No cost, it's just lying around.

Just what I like about this forum, unconditional generosity.

I've got a garage full of SAAB parts that I can't get rid of on a SAAB forum. Everyone thinks I'm trying to fleece them for postage!! I'm happy to give the stuff away, but not pay a courier to deliver a door (with glass/motors/etc).

Agreed!

This 156 is going to be a bit of a project car as it does need a few things sorting, and help such as that is really appreciated.

Sadly, most of the other car forums I've been part of haven't been like this, everyone think's everyone else is out to get them,

But cheers again Pete,

Christ! You lot don't harp on about wanting to see my new knob! Perverts the lot of ya!

Well here she is! It's a bit smaller than my last knob but that's a good thing as I found the large one was hard to get a good grip on. Knobs eh? Who'd have 'em!

Re: Help Required: 156 V6 Lift Up Reverse Gear Knob

Pete, how did you take your wooden knob off? I've been pulling at my knob but can't seem to get it off?

I'd like to take it off undamaged ideally as I've got a wooden centre console and steering wheel that would make a nice ebay triplet.

James,

It's just an interference fit between the gear knob and the splines on the gear stick; I just pulled and twisted the knob off!

Yeah, you can actually hear it clicking as you turn it, I think as you twist and pull it wears the splines out a tiny bit and gives way for the knob to come off completely.

...a good tug/straight pull will do.

Unless there's glue/epoxy/sticky stuff tucked under there to hold it

Re: Help Required: 156 V6 Lift Up Reverse Gear Knob

if you look under the knob there are usualy 2 screws holding the wood on with a seperate plastic part that fits on the splines, it can somtimes be easyer to seperate the knob before removing the plastic part from the splines
