Catalytic Converter

Getting a slight rotten egg smell and reckon that one of mine could be on the way out possibly. Any further checks I can carry out to know for sure? Plus anyone have a good idea of where I could source a reasonably priced one to replace as I have heard they are pretty crazy prices in general, never mind from alfa stealers. JTS model but unsure of which cat is causing the issue.

Idea Re: Catalytic Converter

The rotten egg smell is sulphur in the fuel. This smell can be quite strong under certain conditions. If low grade fuel is used, it may have a higher sulphur content. Petrol should really be low sulphur to avoid acid rain issues these days. Then again, most fuels have the same base, so that is perhaps unlikely. The second could be operating conditions. A lot of stop start driving, short runs, and town running will prevent the cats from reaching 'light-up' temperature whereby they actually work. This will coat the cat innards with unburnt contaminants. In that case, the only way to stop this is to make sure the cat gets hot enough. That is by driving quicker and longer.

Your JTS will have pre and post cat oxygen sensors, and the management system will let you know if a cat has failed by illuminating the managment system malfunction lamp.

Done my CBT and theory test. Awaiting practical big bike test now.
Just gone and got a 750GSX- I'd better pass.

Re: Catalytic Converter

I did get P0430 up but I have since just gotten rid of it, always good to check to see if it returns I say. Basically this means that the oxygen sensor downstream of the catalytic converter on bank 2 is detecting that the converter is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs).

Unfortunately I dont think we can even get Oct 98 petrol now since Shell has been taken over by Topaz (whoever they are!). I have been driving it lightly lately, maybe a few dashes again around will improve my car spirits along with my own.
