Self Repair Rims - Good Idea?

Hey People,

When i first got my 156 there was a bit of curb rash as well as one scrape on the one rim. Now i have tried to source a place to repair this in Victoria Australia, but they're all expensive. Learning that I have tried to seek alternatives. One alternative I have learnt about over at audiworld.com is to do it yourself. I just would like to know if anyone else thinks that this is a viable options?

I would need to know the following:
  • What Filler to use
  • What Colour my rims are painted in
  • What Clear coat to use
  • Sand paper to use
  • Plus i would need paint thinner

If anyone can comment on whether they think this is a good idea or not. I'm very keen to hear everyones views on this subject.

Cheers all

I purchased a kit off Ebay and the Alloy Colour match is rubbish. Alfa Alloys are slightly different to the standard.

Use Plastic Padding as in spite of the others out there claiming this and that, I reckon it gives the best contoured finish, and is so easy to work with. Very rarely do I use any pinhole stopper when I 've used PP, just a fairly heavy primer/filler undercoat, then do a local blow in, with an airbrush, yes you have guessed it,: Silver Boots No.17 Glitter Then just a good clear lacquer. Glasso at the MO'. Love doing the wheel scrapes, keeps this old geezer spouting?

Re: Self Repair Rims - Good Idea?

Thanks for your views guys...

The Wheels I have are the same as those in the image link below.

As you can see from the image there are a fair few scrapes that aren't major, but seem to of taken off the paint. that's not including the curb rash. I really want to get the whole thing cleaned up so i can have some real pride in the appearance of them. Sorry for the dark shots, it's dark atm.

Most imperfections seem to be superficial and can be just be cleaned and resprayed, but others have a small chunks out and will need putty etc. this includes the curb rash.

Does anyone know what and where I can get the real colour for these wheels?
