Re: 156 starting issue

Exactly the same symptoms for me (1.8 sportwagon twinnie) and diagnosis by nice man from the AA with his machine. He says get you home fix can be to unplug cranskshaft sensor connector to release static and re-connect (also advised that once started the camshaft sensor takes over so unless both fail you should be able to get where you're going!).

Re: 156 starting issue

oh yes, how easy is it to replace - diy job or garage? and if not diy is it worth combining with cambelt change?

Re: 156 starting issue

Its an easy fix. The sensor is located underneath the starter motor, so st the right rear of the engine if looking at the front of the car.

The connector for the sensor is brown and clipped on the inlet manifold, you may find it easier to follow the wire down to the sensor.

The sensor is held in place with a M6 socket cap bolt so you will need a 5mm Allen key to undo it.

Re: 156 starting issue

so not anywhere near the cambelt then? - I didn't follow the cable down from the brown sensor but rather assumed it went to the cambelt end! Is it worth changing the cam sensor at the same time (coming up to 110k)?

The cam sensor requires removing the cambelt, so unless you know its faulty I would leave it to the next belt change. The TS engine will still run with a faulty cam sensor at reduced performance.

IIRC the cam sensor connector is blue, but I may be wrong.
