Steering Rack or Lower Control Arms

Hello

Just had the car up on the Jack to look at the lower control arms, and have been told its not tha but the steering rack.

The whole wheel has play, IE it rotates/Wobbles on the hub about 20mm

Any Ideas?

Idea Re: Steering Rack or Lower Control Arms

There is a certain amount of give in the rack due to the hydraulic assistance. Sometimes the inner track rods in the rack can wear, but this is not common in 156s. More likely it is movement in the top wishbones. Test this by holding the wheel at quarter to 3 and wobble it side to side. If movement can be determined in the top wishbone, then it would likely be the top wishbone bushes which are worn.

Re: Steering Rack or Lower Control Arms

Check the tightness of the bolt that goes through the universal joint on the steering column just before it goes through the floor.

My car had about 20mm of slack in the steering, and after tightening the bolt is it now 10mm of slack which is not too bad..
