tyre rubbing on 156

just upgraded from 15's to 215/45/17

thing is i am getting a slight bit of tyre rubbing in the front arches.

i have totally standard (non-SP) suspension so they seem to have plenty of room (and plenty have bigger wheels on lower cars)

at full lock when idle there is a slight rub, this is more pronounced when going over ramps or making tight turns on the move.

the rubbing is clearly heard from the cabin, but not scary loud.

should i be concerned?
can i do anything?
and would lowering make it worse? ( seems obvious but just checking)

Idea Re: tyre rubbing on 156

Your tyre size is right.
The rubbing is likely at the rear of the outer shoulder of the inside wheel. There is not much you can do. Lowering will probably make it worse. Once the tyres wear a little this will subside. Just do some spirited cornering in the meantime to accelerate this wear process. Different tyres could make an effect. The sizes are nominal and do vary slightly as does the shape of the shoulder area.

Re: tyre rubbing on 156

the tyres do have a protruding shoulder, and they are new, so i guess your right.

Re: tyre rubbing on 156

Are you sure the wheel offset is right? What is the offset on the wheels? You could use some 3mm spacers to give a bit more clearance..

Re: tyre rubbing on 156

I think a spacer will worsen the problem

Do you think? I would have thought if the wheel was further out it would be less likely to rub on the suspension.. :hmm:

Re: tyre rubbing on 156

I have 225/45x17 on my 156, and the only time ive had any rubbing() is when the car was fully loaded and had 5 adults on board, and then only when the suspension was compressed by dips in the road.

Have you checked to make sure nothing has come adrift in the wheel arches?

Re: tyre rubbing on 156

I have those size tyres and get rubbing, but have some spacers which eliminate it.

From what I have read this shouldn't be a problem on standard cars (mine is lowered so increased camber = rubbing), I would get your front suspension checked for any wear and if there is none you may have to fit some small spacers.

Edit: When I changed my lower arms (which didn't look that bad) the wheels moved by about an inch when the fresh ones were in, which shows the effect of brand new components on the position of the wheels.

Re: tyre rubbing on 156

on last inspection my suspension was wearing a littlewi shbone/track rod etc, so maybe thats why.

i was for having them done, but was told they had a bit of life yet.

reckon this is the answer then?

all i really want to know is if i need be concerned - the rubbing is of minimal nuisance

Re: tyre rubbing on 156

Do the front tyres rub on the plastic inner arch only on full lock?
