I just got 12 month MOT for £48!

My car just passed with advisery for rear brake pads running thin and rear bush with play, but he said rear bush may suppose to be like that as most new cars are like it!

Anyway the guy that did it is my friend We both used to have RD 125 LC and spin about
He also does the bike MOT's in the garage.

Re: I just got 12 month MOT for £48!

£25 near me. Its all a bit of con. The price often advertised is the maximum a garage can charge. They often tell us that is the price the governement tell them to charge but in fact they can charge as little as they want.

Regards

Rob

I paid £50.25 or something for mine, however I got 13 months as I had it done 1 month early...

The garage does free re-tests, if the car needs work and you have it done there.

I used the local council depot last year and they only cost me £35, I think I'm gonna go back to them next year

Did you know that most MOT protests are from people that have a car that has passed when it should have failed.
This is a perfect example.
It should have failed for the rear bushes.

I agree it should have failed.

However if it was my own car that passed when it shouldn't I don't think I would protest the result. I would get the offending parts repaired though ASAP.

If I had bought a secondhand car, from a dealer with a new MOT, and there were problems that should have made it fail then I certianly would protest, as well as getting the garage to fix it.

The trouble with your own car passing when it shouldn't have failed, is how do you know that they haven't missed some other part, that you haven't spotted either.

Not quite as black & white as that. Depends on how much play there was.

By the way I dont think it was execessive play in the rear bush, I said I'd look in to it but he seemed to think it maybe normal as lots of new cars have it! That's why I thought I'd ask you guys the Alfa professionals

Well apperently the lower arm on last years MOT was advisory and it passed this years, allthough it was a different garage.

Re: I just got 12 month MOT for £48!

A lot of MOT testers have asked that the system automatically alerts them to previous "advisories", but VOSA think that is a bad idea...
They can see them only by bringing up previous tests.

Very easy for you to reach under the back of the car and check for movement in the suspension bushes.
If there is any, you need new bushes/arms.

Did someone say LC??

I have a 'business associate' (I repair his petrol pumps and till) who charges me trade £40-there's obviously a difference between public, trade and cost!

Re: I just got 12 month MOT for £48!

Although the MOT always has me worried (at the though of an expensive bill) £50 for a test is pretty good value I think. You get the best part of an hour and a thorough inspection of the car, well atleast the place I go they do a very thorough but fair inspection and advance warning of areas needing attention. If you like to try and do some of your own maintenance it's helpful to have some of this stuff confirmed. I wouldn't entirely advocate replacing a service with an MOT but I reckon the MOT can be more thorough than some places that service cars.

I wouldn't let a nationwide tyre/clutch/brake place do an MOT on my car, they're always working on sales targets and looking for worn brakes, holed exhausts, tracking to flog you. Much rather use my locally run busy garage who probably don't need to be scratching around for work to meet the regional managers latest target.

Re: I just got 12 month MOT for £48!

I got mine for free, uncles garage. Plus he said he didnt mind cos he buys slots for mot's for only a few pounds so when normal garages charge around £50 they are making a fortune
