Re: Radiator fans don't come on

ARGH!

Fans aren't coming on again! I had it working, now after putting the bumpers back on and the headlights back in the fans do not come on!

The resistors have been removed so they aren't the problem.

So what could it be? Temp gauge will indicate 110 degrees and they don't come on..

Going to do a bit more digging tomorrow morning, see if I can earth the negative of the fan to see if it comes on. If it does, I'm hardwiring in a switch. Sick of the flaming things now, car is all back together ready for it's MOT, and now this

Re: Radiator fans don't come on

Ithink you will have to have that green resistor connected in order to get the fans functioning.
If you can find someone that has the new version of alfadiag that will function the operation of the fan to ensure it works , on single speed initially at least.

I have had the fans running with the green resistors removed, basically all it does having those removed is making the fans run at maximum speed as soon as they are signalled to turn on.

Now the bumper is back on and the headlights are back in, this has stopped working..

I'm checking the connections on the bridges I made for these wires as I speak, I think they might be the problem..

Re: Radiator fans don't come on

took one off two days ago! remove wheels and then plastic inner arches. This reveals two torx screws either side. Bolts on corners underneath and three along front section all quite visible from underneath. Then three more torx bolts in centre on top below the plastic grills with chrome stripes. Not a hard job just the torx screws may round off as they are a crap design.

Sorted it. I unplugged the relay -> earth cable fitting the air intake and forgot to refit it. D'oh. All sorted now though, car is up and running sweetly

Re: Radiator fans don't come on

Hi all

My situation is this:

The other day coming home from work my 156 cut out at a junction , all electrics seemed ok but the car would not start (like it was out of juice but it had plenty). Orange engine icon in top right of rev counter has appeared

The day was warm and i had been stuck in a bit of traffic so i popped the bonnet and noticed that the engine was mad hot yet the cooling fan was not on, i jumped back in the car and fair enough the temp dial was way over the 100 mark.

Details:

Fan does not come on at all (high or low)
Rad condition - fair with plenty of water and no leaks
Resistor shorted out but it didn't help
Unplugged the thermostat temp lead - fan came on but temp dial stopped working (fan obviously OK then)

With the thermostat temp lead unplugged the temp remains around 70deg after a 20mile trip in hot weather so i guess the pump and rad etc are OK. (orange engine icon still there though)

Any ideas folks?

If there is no such thing as a stupid question, what kind of questions do stupid people ask?

Re: Radiator fans don't come on

I think this deserves a thread of it's own (you're more likely to get responses) ...

Well you've covered all the main bases, by unpluging the thermostat and showed that the rad fans come on means that thermostat->rad fan circuit is fine ... I presume when you unplug the thermostat the ECU goes into a panic mode and switches the high speed fan on all the time, one thing I found with my TS when the fans stopped working was that it seemed that the high speed fan would only come on if the low speed circuit was working correctly (although this wasn't thoroughly tested and other people on here disagree with this), you've shorted out the resistor so this rules this out, have you checked the condition of the low speed relay?

Re: Radiator fans don't come on

Thanks Chris

Checked the big black one, took it apart and was amazed at how clean and new it looked, everything ok with it though. I have only given the red one a tap and reinserted it though, i might swap it for one of the others in that bank and see if that has any effect.

I will let you know how i get on.
