I don't get the idea behind putting
"foreign" plates on a car.

Apart from the illegality of it and opening
yourself up to trouble from cops, especially
in other countries, if your car isn't "local"
it's a more likely target for robbing, vandalism
and not getting let out of side streets etc.

AFAIK it's illegal to have anything other than your country of origin, or the euro symbol on the plate. On the plus side, gotta get me some of those Fiat X1/9 plates for shows (assuming my X1/9 ever gets on the road)

I thought you could have any thing you wanted in the EU flag bit? Ive seen all sorts of rubbish. I dont reckon the police would be too bothered as long as the font and spacing are okay.

It is illegal. You can get an on the spot fine if stopped by police.

Re: Italian Dealer Number Plate Surrounds

i'm confused!
there are so many women with playboy logos on the said of the plate round my way, and they sure arent appearing in the magazine! unless it has low standards!
it must be legal as the number of cars with unique images on the side of the plates is too many to count, religious symbols etc, all sorts.

Just because the Police can't be bothered to stop them, that doesn't make it legal.

Re: Italian Dealer Number Plate Surrounds

If your local police officer is having a slow day, or had a row with the wife, this might trigger off a number of number plate checks. Once you're stopped, a full vehicle check might follow.

Mind you, my plates have a nice Alfa logo on the side in addition to the EU symbol. I just drive with my fingers crossed...

VOSA wanted to make it part of the MOT test, but MOT testers objected because it isn't safety related and it is something the Police should be checking.
So it is not currently part of the UK MOT test.

Re: Italian Dealer Number Plate Surrounds

I got pulled a week ago for 'illegal plates' the fact i had a symbol on the side wasn't the issue it was the letter spacing so it spelt my name and the well placed screw that they frowned upon . They had been on for two years without a problem but i guess the fact i was speeding attracted there attention initially , luckily for me though the copper that pulled me used to own a GT and was more interested in the car so i got off without a fine for both or points for the speeding, my lucky day!!!! Just a producer and had to change the plates back to properly spaced ones.
Apparently though the dvla are having a big crack down on illegal plates

Re: Italian Dealer Number Plate Surrounds

THe DVLA page about registration marks is here

General Questions about Number Plates and Registration Marks

The important paragraph here is:
Can other symbols (e.g. national flag, football team crest) be used on number plates?
The Government announced on 28 December 2001 the intention to permit the display of national flags and symbols on vehicle number plates. When the regulations are amended they will provide for the voluntary display of the Union flag, Scottish Saltire, Cross of St George and Red Dragon. Football team crests etc are not allowed.

My Sister works for the DVLA and she thinks the regulations were amended in early 2005, so it is perfectly legal to display Country flags for the UK or the Euro symbol, but nothing else, with the correct FOnts and spacing for the lettering.
