Re: Camshaft Variator Soleniod??

Thinking about it..The oil going into the solenoid is at high pressure, it needs to be to operate the variator. I suppose the oil could be forced up through the solenoid and into the wire, but it will stop as soon as it gets to a plug-in connector.

Yes, using a ty-rap, get some slack in the wiring close to the solenoid and form a drip loop in it (a U shape), make a hole at the lowest point and this is where the oil will go to and drip from.

Re: Camshaft Variator Soleniod??

If you remove the top cover on the engine it is a round thing with a wire coming from it. If you find the oil filler it is about 1 inch above the oil filler and about 2 inches to the right.

Re: Camshaft Variator Soleniod??

when a variator fails on a 156 it sounds like a diesel on start up engine rattling, when i was working for alfa romeo i changed about 5 a week, you have to strip off the cambelt so you might as well change the belt at the same time. Oil can't get into any wiring through the variator cause its mechanical and no sensors or anything around it.

KDC - the solenoid - not the variator.

Yep, but make sure you only punch a hole in the plastic sheath and not into the actual wires otherwise you will get other problems.
