Re: Thermostat change on 2.4jtd 10v

Complete nightmare mate The EGR cooler (aluminium canister below the 'stat) shares a mounting bolt with the 'stat and can't be removed with the 'stat in place because of the coolant pipes from the 'stat, but the 'stat can't be removed until after the EGR cooler because of the shared mounting I don't know how they assemble the things in the first place I wouldn't have bothered doing mine had I known how difficult it would be - eventually succeeded by loosening all the EGR pipes to the rear of the engine. Good luck if you go ahead and make sure you get the right 'stat - later ones like your '02 have the EGR cooler connections, earlier ones don't. Happy to help if you get stuck, cheers,

That's what I expected - lots more plumbing on a JTD unfortunately.

I did mine myself but I don't have an EGR cooler.
The title of my thread says it all really . . .

Did mine myself also , as Simon S says a complete nightmare but not out of it , and you can save yourself a bit at the same time.

Re: Thermostat change on 2.4jtd 10v

Guess you have done this by now but I did mine (twice now!!) for a really annoying over heating problem (over heats when on boost any ideas??!! had new thermostat, and waterpump now, rad next don't think it is head gasket as I am not getting too much pressure in system or losing water) it is battery out and 2 bolts and a few hoses, be ready to lose some skin and swear a little though

Catsplums, sounds like radiator to me, does it look corroded and is it missing fins?

Re: Thermostat change on 2.4jtd 10v

hard to say really, not looking too bad from what I remember (I am in Portugal the car is at home) it was hot both top and bottom of the rad but not sure if that would be normal for a blocked one just letting enough through... temp rises pretty quickly when on boost (need to de-coke my vnt to as it is overboosting and going in to limp mode but think that is just something else to add to the list of stuff!! Found a great artical on doing that job if anyone is interested do a google for "vnt repair" and look at the tdiclub forum entry, good pdf in there different model vnt but same should apply, will do mine soon and probably post pictures and findings)
probably do the rad at the same time, anything else it could be though? does fueling do stuff to the temp like running lean in a petrol motor?
