Not Happy Alfa 147 Jtd M-jet 16v - No acceleration/Black smoke on hills

A friendly hello to you all,

Sad news however, my alfa has died on me after 3 years of carefree driving - & yes the warranty has just run out!

Driving from Oldham to Stafford yesterday & there was hardly any acceleration between the gears, when I eventually got to 50/60mph the car seemed okay - then on any slight hill deceleration occured with black smoke from the exhaust to follow. Once flat again the smoke stopped & eventually a decent speed was achieved.

This morning I went to start it & it failed.

Automechanics seem to think anything from the turbo, airflow meter, EGR Valve or even a blocked cat - I think it will be expensive though.

PS The Amber engine light came on!

Black smoke could be water in fuel, turbo bearing seals gone, wornout valve stem seals, EGR stuck open or piston rings. The loss of power though could be turbo problem, split hose, EGR stuck open or water in fuel.

From those there are 3 main possibilities tht you could look at quickly, water in fuel (drain the filter bowl), Split hose(check your hoses) and EGR, take it off and clean it out.

Or the worst has happend and the belts slipped a tooth.

When the hose splits you get lots of black smoke I can assure you!

Let's think positive and hope it's just the hose.

That's where I would start, most likely the Turbo to intercooler pipe.

Finally got the car seen to yesterday, ran a diagnostic test & the Airflow sensor had gone. This has now been fitted, but the car won't start still! Any ideas?
