New clutch on my V6

I have finally had the clutch changed on my V6. This is after 199,800 miles and 8 years of good service from the previous clutch, but the bearing was putting vibrations back through the pedal when hot and the pressure plate was allowing some slippage under first gear acceleration when the car was loaded up.

I bit the bullet and now have a clutch which is so smooth I can hardly tell it is there. The pedal action is as light as a feather which is taking some time to get used to but its very nice as clutch control is much better. That may be helped by the new slave cylinder (the old one expired as soon as the clutch was fitted) and the first bleed the fluid had ever had.

I thought it would be nice to show you just what the old clutch looked like when it came off after such a lot of wear. There was plenty of friction surface left on the clutch plate itself, although the springs weren't that good. The fun part was the bearing which had about 1cm play in it and which was also slowly chewing its way through the pressure plate arms. It was more a loose assembly of parts than a bearing.

I should put these pictures with my old water pump picture in a Alfa parts hall of extremely fatigued parts!

Re: New clutch on my V6

I should also mention that the clutch change part of the job took about 6 days for my poor long-suffering local specialist. Part of what he did is a real warning to other drivers of an older 156.

This included changing;
* both lower wishbones
* both droplinks
* one upper wishbone (that had over an inch movement, it was really knackered).
* Gearbox oil
* Slave cylinder & bleed
* dropping the subframe with associated seized bolts
* small bit of welding on n\s inner wing.

It took 4-5 hours and a few bent spanners to get the top starter motor bolt out. It is a git to get to without dropping the engine so if you get a sticky one it’s a really hard job.

We won't talk about the week of emissions problems caused by a faulty MAF and lambda plus faulty replacement lambda that caused 4 MOT retests

Nor will we talk of the failure caused by one of those Philips 50% brighter bulbs which would not give a proper beam pattern - they were a waste of money then.

And the final one which was a real problem, a rotted brake pipe.
The pipe from the front o/s brake runs through an area obscured by the subframe. It can't easily be seen without a real concentrated effort but you can just see it with a torch and if you know where it is. It is very likely to be missed by an MOT check (mine should have failed MOT at least 2 years ago) and unfortunately its in a very good place to go rotten. Mine was paper thin and just snapped with the smallest tweak, it was in an extremely dangerous state and if I hadn't had the subframe off it would never have been seen. The bad news is that even with the subframe off it still took 3-4 hours to re-pipe. It’s a sod to get to!

Its definitely something that you should check if you have an older 156. Next time you have an MOT, ask them to look at this pipe. I know no-one wants an MOT failure but we are talking about sudden brake failure here so its potentially your life and others at risk.

As the true time in his garage was just over 2 week, including weekend work, I am very pleased to say that he has good hourly rates.

Yeah, the parts bill was over £800 in total, mainly because I don`t like non-alfa wishbones or MAFs. The clutch is a Valeo so is the same as Alfa parts but a touch cheaper beacuse the box didm't sauy Alfa on it.

I`m hoping for a few more years out of the old girl yet. Actually I got the mileage wrong, its 198,000 at the moment but I reckon I can get to 300,000 if I`m lucky

Good advice David !! but to lessen the tension, even if the pipe bursts there is still (partly) braking possible, the system is separated, but the braking will be... let's say more adventurous ..

Oh yes I was getting worried for a min, as I rely on my brakes a lot
