Project 145 :-)

Hi all,

I hope I've posted this in the correct section. But I was hoping to start a project thread for my new Alfa cloverleaf.

Firstly I really like the car and (touch wood) have no mechanical issues. The car has only done 53k so not bad at all. But the body work leaves much to be desired.

To do:

Side skirt removal fix and replace.
Paint Wing mirrors
Change back box for standard
Towing eye cap
Some bad areas of laquer peel
Wheel refurbishment
Headliner sagging
Tart up the leather seats

Mechanicals:
Remove resonator and install free breathing panel filter

Improving the ride:
Suspension feels a little tired so may rebuild the front and back end.

Brakes aren't as responsive as im used to so may upgrade.

Is there anything that can be done for the hideous understeer?

New exhaust has shown up but I need to cut the old one to accommodate.

Hi,

It shouldn't be under-steering at all. These are very pointy if all is well with the tyres and suspension. Sounds like that needs a thorough look.

These are lovely little cars (I used to have a 146ti which is virtually the same car) - so capable and underrated. Leather interior is rare - looks like you have a potential cracker there. "Classic Car" magazine this month lists these as one of the best hot hatches of the 90's.

Hi there it's a lovely little car and I'm surprised at the performance. Thanks for your advice about the handling. I am likely to go through the front end to make sure everything is OK. For now there is no knocking or banging so it's OK. It does feel a bit tired though.
I'll keep plugging away at it.

Yes, I used to enjoy getting Autolusso South's old 145 CL as a courtesy car- it was great fun to drive.

I don't seem to remember that having any understeer. Shame it is gone now.

The tyres aren't brand new but still maybe 3-4mm on them. They do appear to be wearing evenly. But I've only had the car a little while so it's not to say the previous owner put some part worns on the car.

This weekend I will take the wheels off and see if I can notice anything blindly obvious.

It more how old are the tyres and what brand are they.
All tyres get stiff and hard with age, so 6 or mores years old they are finished. You can on the side wall find the manufacture date. Four digits, first two are week and last two are year: 3404 = week 34 year 2004.
Lots of low price tyres (Chinese or other far eastern) have very poor road holding and braking capacities even when new.
Good luck with the project - 145/146/155 are all very nice cars and the 2 L 16V TS is a very nice engine.

Had a closer inspection of the tyres today. They are a bad mix of old and Chinese and the sidewalls appear to have been scraped against kerbs. So I reckon a change of them will help alot.

Side skirt removed and repaired ish. I was hoping to salvage the original with fiberglass.
I will fill sand and paint. Hopefully it'll be a bit more presentable.

Well I have run into trouble refitting the skirt! A bunch of the clips have broke along with the slides.
It wouldn't be fun if it was easy.

I don't think I would refit the skirts. I would clean all the dirt off and fill the clip holes and paint. The skirts collect mud and cause rust.

Hi Erik thanks for your comment. From a practical and structural point of view I can see your point. However the cills are still clean and rust free.

Also being the vain person I am. I quite like the look of the skirts and feel it would ruin the aesthetics without them.

New clips have shown up today and I bonded all the slides back together. I'm fairly happy with the result albeit taking longer than anticipated.

Yes of course I had the majority of the clips already. But I managed to get the few I needed of a scrap vehicle at motorhog.

I couldn't find the genuine clips elsewhere. But I'm sure you could order them from the dealer.

Hi not sure what had happened to my old account but I have created a new one to continue my project thread. I've had a few months finishing up uni so the car had gone on hold. But nearly finished now so back on with the restoration!!

Good news it passed its MOT for only 65!! Nobody was more shocked than me. But it does need some work and it could be why I'm having handling issues.

1. the front wheels are toed out causing uneven tyre wear. So it is off to the garage this weekend for new tyres and the tracking sorted.
2. It didnt come up as an advisory or even mentioned by the garage but the back suspension i think is fairly light and offers nothing in the way of dampening. When compressed you can see the car bounce maybe 2.5 times before returning to rest. So im going to tackle this too over the next couple of weeks. It doesn't look a difficult job. Unless anybody tells me otherwise?

I reckon that will transform the cars handling and Ill be much happier.

Great work Michael, I found that braided hoses and ferodo ds2500 pads transformed the brakes.
I run my 2.0 146 with resonator removed, panel filter and rerouted air intake, helped by having one knackered foglight.
I run without balance belt and removed all air con stuff and fitted a shorter belt, then gutted a spare cat I had and had a straight pipe welded inside (still have stock cat for mot)
No huge increases but certainly goes better

Hi there thanks for the advice. Performance modifications will be after I get it all sorted. But I have caught the bug I went to a straightliners event this weekend. Some of the cars there very quick!
I reckon I had one of the most unique cars of the show though. Skylines 10 a penny but 145s just me :-). It was pointed out to me that most of them probably broke on the way there.

I think you can get a decat pipe pretty cheap 40ish if you buy from Europe. I'd have to find it again though.

Had a look through the car today. Some of you may know that my exhaust was knocking over speed bumps. I have gotten to the bottom of that. The front most bracket had cone loose and spun leaving the exhaust an inch lower than it should be. It looks a bit of a bad design to me. The bracket appears to sit on a rubber mount which isn't secured. Can some body confirm? I have added photograph.

Also going through the suspension I need a top mount bush. New wishbones. Anti roll bar bushes. Rear shock absorbers.

The bills are piling up!
